How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
This year, my primary plan is to continue building my house until it is fully completed. Right now, I have been able to build the structure and i am left with roofing. I now intend to use my transfers to buy more roofing materials as well as contract some labor to complete the house. It is very important to me to have a place we can truly call home, where my family can feel safe and secure to live in. Once the house is finished, I have plans to invest in more goats. I believe that by buying goats, they will multiply and increase in both number and value over time. I hope to sell some of the goats in the future, which will provide the financial support needed for my children's education. I am committed to making these plans a reality and am hopeful that with perseverance and the support of my transfers, I will achieve my goals.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After my house collapsed, I found myself without a place to live and had to seek temporary shelter while I embarked on building a new house for myself. Constructing a new house has been quite a process, as I needed to gradually buy building materials due to limited funds, which I could not afford to buy the building materials at once. Therefore, I spent $60 on building materials, and I’m glad to see that I’ve made significant progress in erecting the house. Additionally, I spent $25 to buy a goat, hoping it would multiply and increase in value, allowing me to sell it in the future to support my children's education. I also spent $13 on food for my family, adding to our supplies, and bought some sugar so we could enjoy breakfast and have the energy to start our day. Finally, I sent the remaining $4 to my child in school as pocket money, hoping to make her life a little more comfortable while she studies.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I aim to purchase additional goats to expand my livestock, with the intention of them multiplying and providing financial support for my children's future school fees. Additionally, I plan to gradually acquire more building materials to continue the reconstruction of my house. These endeavors reflect my enduring commitment to securing a better future for my family, driven by the determination to overcome challenges and create stability and prosperity for my children.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving the transfers, I remained resolute in my ambition to become a successful livestock farmer. I allocated $30 towards acquiring goats, envisioning their potential to multiply and secure a brighter future for my children. Recognizing the importance of education, I set aside $20 for my two children's school fees, ensuring they can continue their studies without interruption. In the face of immediate needs, I allocated $12 to purchase food, prioritizing my family's well-being amidst scarcity. Additionally, acknowledging the state of my worn-out clothing, I invested $10 in new clothes for myself, understanding the significance of self-care even amidst challenges. Furthermore, with determination to rebuild after our house collapsed, I allocated $30 towards purchasing building materials for our new home, acknowledging the necessity of a stable living environment. Despite the hurdles and uncertainties, each decision reflects my unwavering commitment to providing a better future for my family.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Due to chest complications, I am unable to engage in strenuous activities to earn income. Currently, the cash transfers serve as my primary source of financial support. I am grateful that they have helped support my husband's efforts in paying school fees for our children and ensuring there is food on the table. Looking ahead, recognizing that the cash transfers will eventually cease, I aspire to have established wealth through goat rearing. With two goats already acquired, my goal is to increase the number to at least 10. As these animals reproduce, I anticipate being able to sell them to meet the ongoing needs of my family.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
As the sole provider for our family, my husband relies on making charcoal for a living, which is often unreliable for daily provisions. The cash transfers have proven to be beneficial in meeting some of our family's needs, such as school fees and food for our two children. In the recent three transfers, I allocated $15 to cover school fees and rent for my child, clearing debts to start the next school term with a clean slate. Due to a limited harvest in the last planting season, $23 was used to purchase additional food, ensuring we had enough for essential meals. I also invested $55 to buy two goats and $4 for a hen, marking my first venture into livestock ownership. I am optimistic that even after the cash transfers end, the livestock will reproduce, providing a sustainable source of income to support my family and ease the burden on my husband.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
At present, I possess two goats that were acquired through funds from transfers. Looking ahead, my objective for the remainder of this year and beyond is to utilize a significant portion of my future transfers to acquire additional goats. Once they breed, I plan to sell some of them and utilize the proceeds to cover my son's school fees and address the most urgent family needs.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
In my family, my husband is the sole breadwinner, earning a living by selling charcoal. However, the income from this venture is quite meager and barely covers our family's expenses. Consequently, these financial difficulties have significantly impacted our two sons, both of whom are still in school. Our eldest son is currently in form three at Tsangatsini Secondary School, while our youngest attends primary school. Due to the mounting school fee debts, our eldest son was sent home from school and had to stay there for two weeks. Thankfully, I received my July transfers, and I was able to pay $20 of the debt, allowing him to return to school. Similarly, our youngest son also had to stay home for three days due to the same situation. I managed to pay $5 for him, and I'm relieved that both of them are back in school. With the remaining $9, I purchased food to sustain our family. Unfortunately, my health condition has been deteriorating, and I suffer from severe chest pains, which prevent me from taking up labor-intensive jobs to support my husband with the expenses, especially when it comes to food. However, thanks to the transfers, we can use the money to buy food and ensure that we do not go hungry.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The current structure that accommodates my two children is in a bad state as the roof has been letting in rainwater over the past week. This prompted them to move into my house, where they have been sharing space with my husband and me. I feel like this has deprived everyone of their private space, given the age differences between our children and us. Building a new house for them will be the best solution. I hope that I will be able to save to buy building poles and iron sheets to construct a one-room structure for them.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
For a while now, I have suffered chest complications that hinder me from actively working to contribute to my family's needs. Am sad to not be in a position of supporting my husband to provide for our two children. He struggles by himself every day to make a living through charcoal making, a job that hardly serves us regular bread. To establish an investment that is less physically demanding, I decided to start rearing goats. So far, I acquired two goats worth $55 from the latest two cash transfers. As these animals multiply, I can sell them to cover needs like school fees and food. Also, one of my children had missed school for a week owing to unpaid tuition, which prompted me to spend $9 on reducing the debt. At least, he resumed his studies and has never been sent home to date. Finally, I used the remaining amount of $4 to acquire food to boost the little that was in the household at the time.

What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Unfortunately prior to receiving the donations from the organization, it had actually been almost over a week since my son was kicked out of school because I had failed to pay for his tuition. That is why I immediately decided to go and pay KES 1,500 so that he could finally resume school. Afterwards I decided to spend KES 1,000 on purchasing two hens because I wanted to invest in poultry farming for commercial gain. I then ended up using the balance of KES 900 on nourishment purposes since we barely had any food so I bought five packets of maize flour.

In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I commend the organisation in educating us on how best to invest and keep the money safe from the fraudsters. However, I recommend that the organisation enrolls more people and help those languishing in poverty.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a huge portion of my transfer amounting to KES 2500 to buy a goat. The main reason for buying the goat is to accumulate wealth. In our culture, wealth is measured by the number of livestock that one has. Once the goats multiply in numbers, the wealth will significantly increase. Besides buying the goat, I paid school fee arrears for my son who was at home after being sent home to pick school fee balances. He spent a whole week at home because i did not have money and neither did my husband. My husband is a casual laborer earning a living through the sale of charcoal. The demand for charcoal is very low making it hard to sell since the customers prefer to use alternative fuel such as firewood.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was in the kitchen preparing lunch for my son. My son came running towards me from the house, holding my phone. He broke the good news that I had received my first transfer. I could not believe my years. For some seconds, I stood there motionless. I felt thrilled as tears of joy rolled down my cheeks. I called my husband and delivered the good news and he was happy too.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference the transfer has made in my life is to enable me to pay school fees for my son. I am passionate about education. I feel terrible when my children stay at home because of a lack of school fees. The transfer allowed me to keep my child in school.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I cannot work due to my poor health. I often have severe chest pains whenever I engage in extreme manual work. My husband is the sole breadwinner of the family (husband, wife, and 1 child). He works as a casual laborer making and selling charcoal. He earns very little from his job (250) per day. His earning less has affected his capability to provide fully for the needs of the family (paying school fees, buying food, and medication). In the last two months, our two children could not resume their studies due to school fees arrears. Immediately after I received my transfer, I spent KES 800 to pay part of the school fees debt so that my children would go back to school and continue with their education. I later spent the remaining KES 350 on buying food for the family. This helped to ease the burden on my husband of catering to all the bills.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have 2 children who are still in school. My goal is to enable them to go through their education journey up to university. Without any reasonable source of income, this dream will be unattainable. To achieve this ambition, I will use 15,000 KES to buy 5 goats. These animals will be my source of income and a store of wealth. I will be selling the livestock whenever I will be required to pay my sons' tuition fees.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Good health is above any form of wealth. I do not remember the day I fell seriously sick to the extent of seeking medical attention. My wellness is my ray of hope for longer life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Four of my children are still under my custody. I am responsible for their well-being. The main challenge I face is providing them with food sufficiently. I have no steady source of income. Charcoal burning is not reliable because the customers are inconsistent. Sometimes I can go for almost 2 weeks without selling even a single sack. This leaves me with no money to purchase food.
