How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the next year and beyond, I wish to have started a business that will be bringing in profits to support the education of my daughter, who is currently in grade eight. Particularly, I wish to venture into the practice of making and selling donuts in my village. Not only will this hustle generate income and keep my child in school, but it will also shield me from returning to charcoal making, an activity that took a serious toll on my physicality.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my point of view, giving cash to people from poverty-stricken communities, such as mine, is what Give Directly does well. Take the case of my daughter, who unlike before the transfers, has never missed a day of school, thanks to the cash aid. Am certain that if it were not for Give Directly, she would have probably dropped out of school since I would not have afforded to pay her school fees. She is currently in grade eight and is set to join high school next year. Am more prepared to face her secondary school tuition than I was before since the cash transfers allowed me to bank on my future financial security through livestock keeping. I cannot pinpoint anything that the organization could work better on.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Before the cash transfers, I used to burn charcoal to meet the needs of both of us, which include food and her school fees. The money could barely cover all these expenses, which made my child frequently miss classes due to unpaid fees. When I received the cash, I made it a priority to set aside an amount that would particularly cater to her school needs, which summed up to at least $60 per academic year. Am glad this has kept her in school ever since and has never missed on her learning; she is currently in grade eight. Next, I bought two cows with the remaining amount. Owning these animals is a crucial investment for the future, since as they reproduce and expand the herd, so as my wealth increases. Honestly, words are not enough to express my gratitude to Give Directly for the great support it offered my daughter and me. It has been almost a year since I received my last cash transfer and am grateful I have never set foot in a field to make charcoal for money.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 6 am when I was on my farm growing maize for my household consumption. I heard my mobile phone ringing. Being illiterate, I had to leave what I was doing and went home for my helper to check the messages since it was at that date when I was promised to receive the transfer. I was so happy and relieved of all the stresses when the news landed to my ears that I had received my transfer. I thank the Almighty God for such a blessing to my household.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Possessing oxen and ox-plough is the biggest difference the daily life. This is because I had been tilling my farm using my hands something that is extremely tiresome, time-consuming, and with a low harvest. At the moment, I am owning oxen which will help me in preparing my farm. I am confident that I will be producing enough harvest hence food security for the family.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a peasant farmer growing maize for my household's consumption. I was using the old method of farming of using hands and hoe which is characterized by low harvest. I had wished to improve my farming by purchasing oxen and an ox-plough. Therefore, after receiving the transfer, I used KES 40,000 to acquire oxen and ox-plough. I also spent KES 10,000 to invest in starting goat rearing by buying 4 goats. This is my long-term investment to sell the offspring to support me in any emergency. I also used the remaining amount to purchase food and paid part of my kid school fee

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have desired to invest in livestock rearing but lack of money has been hindered me to achieve my dream. My plan once I receive this transfer is to start with 10 goats that will cost me KES 30000. I am also planning to spend KES 10000 to clear school fees arrays for my daughter. I will further spend KES 20000 to buy a bed and mattress to avoid the cold floor.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I have been struggling in paying school fees for my daughter alone. Last month my son paid KES 3000 school fees for her sister, this made me happy because I was able to save the little amount I had to buy 2 chicks.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial Crisis is the biggest challenge that I am currently facing. This has been made worse by the current drought that has made food and water very expensive. The little I get from my charcoal work cannot fully support all my family expenses. I have a daughter in school, paying school fees is now a problem.
