How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different from how it would have been if I never received this transfer in that I bought a pair of oxen. I anticipate that this pair will be very useful in cultivating my farm since they will be able to finish a bigger area in few days as compared tilling the land by myself or practicing labor exchange at I have completed training them. Planting a bigger piece of land will tackle food security in my household. On the other-hand, I shall no longer stay in a leaky grass thatched house after building a decent spacious iron sheet house . Thanks to GiveDirectly.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did well by giving my community members money which had no conditions on how to spend it . Therefore , most of us who benefited from the money made sure to use the money on the things they lacked the most like new houses , household items. There is nothing wrong which GiveDirectly did at its work.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent my second transfer to buy a pair of oxen . I am happy that I would be able to cultivate a larger piece of my farm on time unlike before when I practiced labor exchange which brought about delay in working on my farm. I bought building material such as timbers and nails that facilitated the construction of my new house . The remaining amount I bought food.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
I was previously sheltering in an old house which was grass thatched and also was in a state of collapsing. My dream was to live in a decent shelter but because I could not afford to buy any of the building materials, I had to continue living in this house. When I received my transfer, I spent a larger portion of it to purchase enough building materials which include 26 pieces of iron sheets, building poles and other materials, including paying the mason for his job. I am grateful to GiveDirectly for offering this financial support to us. At least now I was able to build a new iron-roofed house and thus upgraded from the grass thatched house. To me, building a new decent house for my family is the biggest difference in my daily life.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I saw the transfer notification early in the morning, on checking to confirm, the message was from GiveDirectly informing me that I had received my first transfer. I felt happy as I began to plan on how I would use this money to impact my life.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent KES 22000 from my first transfer to purchase a cow as I did not have any livestock in my homestead before. Looking at my financial status, I couldn't have acquired any of them. It's only through GiveDirectly that I was able to buy the cow. I am expecting it to reproduce and I will be getting milk for our consumption and for sale to earn an income. I also took KES 26500 to purchase 26 pieces of iron sheets, building poles and other materials to facilitate the construction of a new house. I was living in a house that was in a very bad condition as it was grass-thatched and living in it was just horrible. I was not at peace at all though there was nothing I could do to save my situation because I could not afford to buy any of these materials. I am expecting it to be ready soon and move into it. I spent the remaining amount to cater for my household needs such as buying foodstuffs as well as paying for other household expenses.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
In our community owning livestock is the biggest show of success and development there is.Those who have livestock are treated with a great sense of respect that I have also wished to gain but since I have no money to buy my own, I am forced to depend on my neighbours own for major activities like ploughing land.Since it is normally hired out to many people, it delays farming in that by the time it reaches my farm, the rains have already stopped and this leads to poor harvest. With this money, I will be able to improve the status of my household in society also by purchasing some oxen and the ox plough, a dairy cow and some goats for keeping. I will also use the balance to repair my house that was destroyed by heavy winds and pay school fees for my children.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening when my husband returns home from work with food for the family. Since his job is not stable and we eat from hand to mouth, whenever he leaves in the morning there is no certainty that he will come back with anything. Being to share supper together as a family makes me very happy because I am assured that at least for that very day, my children will go to bed fully satisfied.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Not having a stable source of income is my biggest hardship. So severe is our situation of not being able to provide for our children's basic needs such that even building nor repairing my current house that was blown off by heavy winds around two years back has not been possible. The consequence of this has been my two children being forced to go seek shelter every night at their grandmothers which is also very cramped. When it comes to their schooling, of late I can hardly cope. Up to this far I have tried to ensure that they are not sent home but it is a big strain for me since it requires a lot of sacrificing on our other necessities.
