"Currently, I rely on farming as the main source of income but whatever I get from it is spent on food for the family. I'm, therefore, planning to start a business. In the next six months, I will be saving the transfers from GiveDirectly and ensure that I have enough capital to help me start a meaningful business that will supplement what I am already getting from farm produce."

"It has been 5years since i was diagnosed with tonsillitis, a condition that keeps on reoccurring, something that has made my family lag behind in terms of development since my husband who works as a casual labourer in tea plantations and earns an average of ksh 150 per day spends most of his salary in my medication now that i am always in and out of hospitals. This is the biggest hardship we are facing in this family"

"For four years now, I have been engaging in charcoal burning business to meet the needs of the family. This was after the passing on of my partner who was the sole breadwinner. It was devastating when it came to my realization that I needed to step up and fend for the family. Life doesn't prepare anyone for such kind of a predicament and what kept me moving was my kids because I needed to be strong for them. My greatest desire has been to adequately provide for their educational needs. However, the financial constraint has been a hindrance to this. As a result, I have sacrificed a lot to keep them in school; sometimes I skip meals to save money for their tuition fee. Therefore, once I receive my transfers I will put a grocery store within the village. This will earn me a daily income, and the backbreaking charcoal burning will be something of the past. I part from that, I intend to invest in livestock rearing."

"Being a single mother, the biggest hardship I am facing is raising up my children alone.I am a casual labourer and what I get in a day is not enough to fully cater for my children's needs. As a casual labourer you are never assured of getting work to do.I depend on the availability of work on people's farms.Another challenge I face as a single mother is taking care of my children especially when I am out working. This has forced me to take my children to boarding school which is expensive for me.I have no one to take care of my children who are in primary school while I work for long hours."

"School fees has been a big burden for me.Receiving this money will therefore be a big relief for me since I will clear secondary school fees arrears for my two children. The arrears add up to Ksh 12,000.I have also not paid this terms fees. This money will help me clear. When my children will be in school my mind will be at peace to enable me continue with a little business. The remaining money will play a big part in boosting my timber business.I buy trees which I get timber from them then sell to those constructing houses or making furniture. The profit I get from this business will help me pay school fees in the coming years."

"I am in a new stage in life which is marriage( 1 year now) and this has been a big hardship for me.This is mainly because we live in a communal land as an extended family and there is a lot of gossip and hatred from my in laws and the extended family at large.Whenever I succeed in something they always try to bring me down. My wish is to start a business that will keep me busy instead of spending most of the time around the village. "

"Imagine a community without access to clean and safe water for drinking. Most people in my community are dependent on open water pans to draw water for domestic purposes including livestock and household consumption. In a community with rampant behaviour of human open defecation, these water pans are contaminated and a safe haven for all manner of bacterial infections. Though I may have some stored rain water in my house at the moment, my biggest worry is an imminent drought season which may force me to draw the same contaminated water for household use and consumption. Though equipped with information about the danger lurking in these water pans, I live a life of fear knowing my family is not free and safe. "

"My expectation in the next six months is to expand my business. Since I live here, I know almost all the needs that my community have if not all. I am working hard to ensure that I bring all these items because its the only way that I will attract more customers. I wish I could get everything they need so that they will not lack anything that they want."

"I expect to buy decent clothes for my children in the next six months. I feel they walk naked because they wear old torn and shuttered clothes that lowers their self-esteem and dignity. I am looking forward to changing their living standards."
