"Subsistence farming is what I have been depending on for my survival but this has been unreliable since the rain patterns in our area are not predictable. In most cases, my harvests are always low usually 1 bag which sustains us only for 2 months. Therefore, food insecurity is basically the biggest hardship that I have ever faced in my life."

"The biggest hardship I have faced in my life is having to feed my family. We depend on farming and with unpredictable weather conditions lately, we have been getting losses year in, year out. We grow maize and beans but prolonged droughts have seriously affected us. Personally, I got only half a sack of maize from the 1 acre piece of land that I farm. This is hardly enough to feed my family of 5 members."

"Food insecurity is my biggest worry. This is mainly because the farm has become unproductive coupled with low rainfall in the past season. I have to dig deep into my pockets to buy food from retail shops as I wait for my plants to mature. With an income of 2500 shillings a month, it is almost impossible to eat all three meals in a day."

"Part of my roof leaks in water during rainy seasons, thus this money will enable me to renovate the roof as well as install ceiling boards in my house. I also intend to buy a dairy heifer costing $200 that will be a source of milk for my family consumption as well as income in future when it multiplies. I will then save the remaining part of my transfer to buy nutritious food for my spouse who has been ailing from stoke for the last 7 years."

"My husbands works as a grounds man in a rental apartment in a nearby town. His salary is very uncertain and sometimes delays up to 2 months. This makes it difficult for us to plan and get our needs well satisfied. Most of the time we end up using his salary to clear debts leaving us with little to buy food, clothes and other needs."

"My husband is asthmatic and he is the one we depend on to feed the family. His condition sometimes worsens and given the nature of his job ie farming and casual jobs, he struggles a lot. In 2016 for example he fell very ill and for two years he was in a bad condition. My first two children had to drop out of school because we could not pay their school fees. We used the little we had to pay his medical bill. He is in continuous medication and this has been very costly. One tablet costs 0.1 USD and sometimes he takes up to 3 in a day depending on his condition.I have 10 children and satisfying all their needs has been a big challenge for me."
