"I rely on subsistence farming to fend for my family. I mostly grow maize, beans, onions and vegetables. The profits I get from the sale of these produce is hardly enough to cater for the basic needs of my family. The biggest challenge for me is raising the school fees for my kids since a large chunk of the profits goes to food. To try and boost my finances, I work as a farmer during daytime and in the evening be a night guard at the nearest fuel station. With no time to rest, I feel my body is taking a toll on me and this for me is the biggest hardship I have ever faced in my life."

"Before GiveDirectly visited me, I was staying in a small ,shanty and poorly constructed house. I had no plans of building a decent house since I have been struggling financially for many years. However, upon receiving the transfer, I decided to buy enough building materials which include iron sheets and building poles in order to construct a decent house. This to me makes it to be the biggest difference because in my daily life. I had tried to build at my own cost but I failed due to lack of financial resources. I am grateful to GiveDirectly for helping me achieve this dream."

"I have lagged behind in terms of developing my family. The reason for this is that I do not get any assistance from my husband since he is an alcoholic addict. The little he gets from his casual jobs all ends up in buying alcohol. Because of this, my family of six all live in a single grass thatched house that is hardly enough to accommodate all of us. Additionally, my kids lack the simple basic needs of food, shelter and clothing that all kids of this generation ought to have. As result, receiving this money means that I will be able to realize all these. I intend to build a semi permanent house for 30,000 shillings, buy one dairy cattle, a sheep and ten chicken for a combined sum of 35,000 shillings. I will then use 5,000 shillings to buy clothing for my kids and the remaining balance to save for other eventualities."

"I am getting old and can no longer performed some duties in my house. An example of this is smearing my two roomed-mud walled house. I have always wished to have money so that I could rebuild the walls with sand. I think this is the best time to do this, I have estimated the cost to around 30,000 shillings. I also intend to buy a dairy cow so that whenever the one I have does not produce milk,I do not incur extra cost buying milk from my neighbours."

"The biggest hardship we have faced in life is the continued inadequacy of food in our household. Specifically, we always struggle to get some food because that is one of the most pressing and unavoidable concern in our family. As such, we have made no significant developments since we use all our income on meeting such basic needs. As a subsistence farmer, we are experiencing poor yields from our farms due to climate change."
