"The biggest hardship is a proper way to find food for my family as you know I got separated from my husband and to be honest my business is not that stable I'm just waiting for the transfer to come so that I should use part of the money to boost the business."

"I will use this money to buy a cow and a sheep. I have planned to buy one cow but I haven't save enough money yet. My priority is a cow because it will help me to cut down cost of purchasing milk. Getting this money is a big opportunity for me to actualize my projects at once because this money will be enough to fund all projects that I have at the moment."

"Receiving this money from GiveDirectly has helped me a lot in my farming activities and I have also been able to buy iron sheets for my house that I am going to build. It is planting season in my village and I did not have money to buy seeds and fertilizer. The money has helped me to buy the inputs and now I am going on with the planting. I have also been able to buy iron sheets and other materials that I will use to build the house. I have always wanted to build a new house for my family because we have been living in a grass-thatched house for so long. The house is not that conducive and comfortable to live in because it is always full of smoke and the clothes also get smoke when there is fire. With the new house that is roofed with iron sheets, I can collect rainwater, and my family and I will have a conducive environment to sleep and relax."

Annah
received a $501 initial payment.
"This money from GiveDirectly is going to help me a lot. I gave out ten percent of the money to the church as my tithe and as a way of saying thank you to God because I did not know that I would ever receive such kind of money. I am planning to finish building a house that I had started to build but due to lack of finances, I had put aside the plan. The rest of the money, I plan to use in my medication because I usually have health issues. This health issue was what had made me not to continue building the house because most of the money I had, I had spent on medication."

"I depend on my hotel business to get income. The income which I get every month is 5,000 Kenya shillings per month. This is not enough to cater to my family's needs as well as expanding my house. This forces me to look for other casual jobs such as ploughing at different farms so as to increase income. Low income is therefore, the biggest hardship in my life."
