"I spent a larger portion of the transfer to buy building materials which include 35 pieces of iron sheets, building poles and nails to facilitate building a new house. The previous house was very small and could not accommodate my children. They had to seek shelter elsewhere at night. I am glad that they will no longer be troubled on where to stay. Apart from this, I also spent KES 9000 on bought an an ox plough for my pair of oxen to aid me in my farming. I had a pair of oxen but I was hiring the ox plough from my neighbours. I am relieved of the hiring costs having my own for ploughing."

"Receiving this money means that I will now be able to buy farm inputs for my garden especially fertilizer in order to be food sufficient next year. For many years I have been unable to harvest enough maize for consumption and I believe this is my chance to have a bumper yield next year."

"I spent a larger portion of my transfer on buying livestock which include three goats and a cow. It was my desire to have livestock like my neighbours but I could not buy any because of my lowly financial status. These are assets to me and I am expecting them to reproduce and increase in number. I can sell the offspring to cater for my financial needs. In addition to this, I will also be getting milk from the cow for sell. I spent the remaining amount to buy new clothes for my children as well as foodstuffs that will serve us for a long time."

"I spent part of the first transfer on buying a new bed and a new mattress to replace the old mats that I was sleeping on. I am now sleeping comfortably on my new beddings unlike before when I was using the mats. The transfer also enabled me to renovate my house which was dilapidated and nearly collapsing. I bought some building materials such as blocks, sand, cement and iron sheets. I am rebuilding it so that it can be more stable and withstand heavy rains. I also paid the mason for his job. I spent the remaining amount to buy clothing for my children. I was also running out of foodstuffs thus I bought enough that will take us a whole month."

"I used the transfer to pay for my son's medical bill. He was undergoing a surgery and paying for the medical expenses was not easy. I had sold almost everything I had to pay for the bill. When I received the transfer, I was greatly relieved because I cleared the medical bill and he was treated. The operation was successful and he is now recuperating well. I would not have paid for the medical expenses had I not received this money. I am grateful to GiveDirectly for the financial help. Seeing my son doing well is the biggest difference in my daily life."

"Receiving this money means building a good house for my family. This is because we have been living in grass thatched houses all our lives and they keep on collapsing, since they cannot withstand strong winds and heavy rainfall. Our current house is equally damaged and its no longer safe for us. The mud walls are very weak and the roof is leaking, making it unbearable during rainy season. As if this is not enough, the house does not have a door making it easy for snakes to slither inside."

"The biggest difference in my daily life is that I now own livestock which include goats and a cow. To me, these livestock are the only assets that I own. Through them, I am expecting to educate my children to reach their educational goals. I am expecting them to multiply and have many of them. I can readily sell the offspring to pay for my children's fees. Apart from raising fees for my children, I will also be benefiting from the milk that the cow will be producing. I will sell the surplus and earn an income."
