"I have looking after my neighbour's cattle for the last 14 years without having one of my own. Receiving this money means that I will be able to buy three dairy cattle for a total cost of 50,000 shillings and another 20,000 shillings to cater for their feeding program. For the remaining balance, I will use to construct a poultry unit for my existing chicken and maybe add some more."

"The biggest hardship I have faced in my life is lack of a proper house for my family. I have been living under a leaking grass-thatched house for many years and this has posed a great challenge to my family especially during the rainy seasons."

"I spent KES 20000 of the second transfer on purchasing some building materials to finish the construction of my new house. I resolved to build a new house because my previous house was in a very bad state. It was almost collapsing and I did not have enough financial resources to renovate it. I am happy that I managed to buy the remaining materials and its now finished. In addition to this, I also took KES 19000 to buy a dairy cow which I am expecting it to reproduce and have many of them. I am planning to sell the offspring to raise fees for my children. I spent the remaining amount to buy foodstuffs and did a shopping on new clothes for myself and my children."

"I am a motorcycle taxi driver who is employed. The income I get per day is around 3 USD since I have to give half of what I get to the motorcycle owner. With the high cost of living, this is only enough to get food for the day for my family. I will soon become a father and my biggest worry is taking care of all the family's needs with the little income that I get. I dropped out of school in my second year of secondary due to lack of school fees. I had to drop out so that my elder siblings could complete their studies. Securing meaningful employment is what has been my biggest hardship."

"I have ever been sleeping on roped bed with rugged sacks something that never gives me better sleep and I always wake up in the middle of the night due to the pains I feel on this kind of bed. I have imagined having a modern bed plus a mattress but this has never been possible due to the financial crisis. With the help from GiveDirectly's cash grant, I am confident that I will be able to own this since I intend to spend $150 to ensure this comes true and the remaining amount of the first transfer will help me to pay school fees for my children. On the other hand, I wish to start selling clothes in our nearby town in order to have a reliable source of income for my family and this will mean spending the entire second transfer to have this business done. This will have a better change of my livelihood and hence a transformed life."

"I had acquired a motorcycle on a loan and I was unable to complete the payment on time. When I received my second transfer, I paid KES 30000 to reduce the outstanding loan amount. At least I am now remaining with a manageable amount that I can comfortably clear through the daily proceeds from the motorcycle. This motorcycle has been my only source of income so far as it provides taxi services. In addition to this, I also spent KES 22000 of the remaining portion of the transfer on buying five goats which I am currently keeping in my homestead. These are assets to me which I can rely on in case of a financial need. I am expecting them to reproduce and increase in number. As they increase number, I will sell the offsprings to raise some money and buy a cow."

"Prolonged period of drought has been the biggest hardship we have faced in life. We normally experience inadequate rainfall in our region making our everyday life unbearable. Owing to this, we opted for drought resistance cows (indigenous) which are less productive. Even though we have 2 acres of land under cultivation, we harvest approximately 1.5 bags of maize which is hardly enough to cater for the entire family of eight."
