"We have not had a maize harvest for the past six years. This being our staple food and what children are brought up being fed on,it means that we have to constantly buy maize to feed the family. It is always a loss year after year considering the cost of seeds and other input. This also means that we are forced into casual labour so that we always have money to buy this commodity.Being a casual labourer who only depends on a daily wage of Sh 200,sometimes the family is forced to forego some other needs so that we can at least have food for the children. This is the biggest hardship I have faced"

"Being a tailor my ambition has always been to start a tailoring shop to boost my income. However, this has never been achievable because I lack capital. Currently I use a rented sewing machine which requires 900 shillings a month and in most cases I fail to raise it. To make it worse, it broke down 3 months ago which means I cannot work. Receiving this money therefore means realizing my dream. I will use around 25000 shillings to purchase a sewing machine and fabrics to set up the shop. This will see an improvement in my financial status."

"My biggest hardship is lack of inadequate money to cater for my family basic needs such as shelter. This is due to the job I am doing. I work as a charcoal vendor which earns me 450 Kenya shillings in a week."

"Receiving this money means better health for me. Currently, my house is grass-thatched and I am getting rained on when it rains because half of the roof is open. This has affected me health-wise since I have suffered frequent colds, especially during the rainy season. I plan to spend a better portion of my first transfer ($400) to construct an iron-roofed house that will spare me from the night's cold. On the other hand, I will spend the remaining transfer to buy modern beddings and also to buy 7 goats to start livestock keeping for future use."

"Despite owning a shop business, I am still forced to engage in charcoal burning to get more capital for my business. This is because I feel so bad to see my customers miss what they want to buy from my shop. Considering this charcoal job being energy-intensive, I get so tired and also sometimes I am ashamed to be seen doing such kind of job. Hence, financial constraints remain to be the biggest hardship that I have ever faced in my life."

"Seeing my children at home due to lack of school fees is the biggest hardship in my life. My children study in a local primary school, a school where parents cater for the salaries of all teachers. Sometimes they are sent home only to find out that I have nothing to give them."

"When you look at my house, it looks very pathetic and I feel ashamed of myself most of the times. With the money gift, I planned to build a good house and to start a business."

"The biggest hardship I have faced so far is finding enough agricultural input. This has made us to be harvesting enough for food. And as you know, my husband is albino, and with the way things were in Malawi it was so difficult for him to be doing business as his life was in danger. All that has made our lives difficult."
