"Since my husband passed on 11 years ago, I have gone through many hardships. The biggest hardship was harrasment from my in-laws who wanted me to be inherited as a wife as per our culture. This was against my will. I had to endure a lot since I had nowhere to go until my son bought me a piece of land far away from them. It is 1 year and 4 months now since I settled in this place. The first 10 years after the demise of my husband had been really tough for me."

"I believe in education as an investment. I have always tried my best to educate my children but school fees has been a big challenge. Receiving this money will help me invest more in education. My first born is in secondary school while my second born will be joining secondary school next month. I will use 300 USD to ensure that they continue with their studies. I will then use the remaining 250 USD to repair my house. I will plaster the walls to replace the mud walls then replace the iron sheets since they leak during the rainy season."

Samuel
received a $492 second payment.
"In my opinion, GiveDirectly is such a unique organization becasue ever since I was born I have never come across any organization which gives out unconditional money which is non-refundable. The entire village has now changed and this is evident through the livestock that most of on which still feels like a dream to us. Also, the beautiful houses whereby back in the days they were just temporary huts. On the other hand, GiveDirectly has not done anything wrong."

Beatrice
received a $492 second payment.
"I spent part of my second transfer on buying building materials such as fifteen pieces of irons sheets at 980 each, and timber. This was for the completion of my house because the initial one was not in a good state. To add to that I gave the mason KES 4800 as the labour charge. Also, I spent KES 18000 on cleared school fees for my daughter who was in high school sitting for her final examination. I am glad the money came in good time becasue I doubt if they could allow her to do her exams. In addition to that, I bought a new bed and mattress at KES 11500 for my children since the previous one was very small. With the remaining amount of money I bought enough food and decent clothes"

"Lack of a reliable source of income is my biggest hardship. I mostly depend on my children who work as casual laborers. These jobs earn them 300 Kenya shillings which are not enough to cater for all their needs such as food and mine because they have other dependants."
