"The biggest hardship that I have faced in my life is poverty. I fail to afford simple things because I depend on piece work (ganyu). My husband is in South Africa to look for greener pastures but to no avail. It is so hard for me to buy proper food and daily needs like soap."

"In the year 2018 my daughter got sick and she was diagnosed with cancer, the process of treatment started and being a jobless person who depends only on the husband things ware very hard. I was forced to sell all the dairy animals in the compound, sheep and piece of land so that I can pay for her medication. I spend all the resources in medication leaving us without anything. That is the biggest hardship have ever faced."

"Receiving this money means that I will be able to buy a cow. I started my own family about 5 years , yet I don't have a cow. I get milk for household use from my father in-laws cows . Sharing the 3 litres that he gets is not always enough. I rely on my husband to provide for us who works as a security guard. His income can not raise enough to buy a dairy cow. I will use part of the money from GiveDirectly to buy two dairy cows. They will produce milk for my family as well as for sale in order to get some cash for buying foodstuffs."

"My family is grateful for the transfer to be received. We have a house that needs to be renovated. I will use the money to buy bags of cement so that I can plaster walls of my house. My children's clothes are also torn apart such that I will also buy them clothes when I receive my transfer. I will also buy matresses for my household. My husband also intends to start a business so that he can multiply the money."

"The biggest hardship we have faced is the frequent droughts we experience in our area. As a subsistence farmer, I would like to irrigate my farms during the dry seasons. Unfortunately, I have never afforded to acquire the necessary equipment for storing water and irrigating my farms. As such, droughts have been destroying our crops, making it difficult for us to survive, meet our financial and food demands."
