"My husband uses to work as a conductor in our nearby town, but this job came to an end 5 years ago. Since this happened, life has been challenging because he was the only breadwinner to our family. Both of us now depend on casual jobs which are not guaranteed and gives us 400 shillings which is not enough to sustain all our basic needs such as food. Therefore, securing a good job both for us has been a challenge."

"I spent $220 to purchase building materials comprising of 20 iron sheet, building poles, timber and nails this was for the construction of a modern Iron roofed house for the family. Furthermore, I spend $200 to educate my sixth child who is in a boarding secondary school by clearing the fees arrears of $100 and paying 100 for first term. The one I had earlier was old and was about to collapse. In addition, I bought 3 goats for $50 each this is a long term investment for the children, I will sell them to pay school fees once they multiply."

"After receiving the first transfer, I have been lucky and one of the most grateful beneficiaries of the transfer as I have done a lot. The livestock I invested heavily in has been the greatest difference in my daily life. This has not only saved the cost of buying milk for my family but also brought the joy that has been elusive in the family. I am grateful and have promised myself to even make much more difference with the second transfer that I am currently anticipating."

"Constructing a bigger house for my family after receiving the first transfer has really boosted my morale and rejuvenated my energy. This has been the biggest difference in my daily life as I am slowly building a habit of waking up every morning to get things done. A time has come in my life where I wake up every morning with an urge to make a difference using the available resources with the hope of producing more and more to sustain my family. I am grateful to GiveDirectly for the great work, and even though we are just halfway, I am happy with the projects I have invested in."

"For a long time, I have been paying my children school fees in form of materials such as firewood and sacks of maize harvested from my farm. Since 2015 we have faced a great challenge because we have been unable to harvest enough maize due to drought, weather changes, and diseases. I have also fallen a lot of trees to supply firewood to schools as school fees. At the moment my compound is almost deserted due to cutting down of trees more often. Therefore receiving this money will enable me to pay a full-year school fee amounting to $500 for my son who is currently at Kericho Tea secondary school. I have also established a shop in the nearby center but I have not completed nor furnished it. Therefore I shall use approximately $100 to complete the shop, make shelves and paint it. The remaining $500 I shall use as capital for my business."

"I love education since I have witnessed from my neighbors how it can transform lives to be better and this is why I have struggled to educate all my six children. It has been hard financially to pay their school fees since we majorly depend on casual jobs and subsistence farming. Since I prioritized my children's education, I was left living in a small house for quite along. When I received the cash transfer, I will spend KES100000 to build a more decent, semi-permanent house. This will assure me ample decent palace to enjoy my old age in. I want to spend KES10000 on my household's daily basic needs mainly food and clothing."

"The biggest hardship I have ever faced in my life is the long rain between March to August 2019. Even though this was a blessing to us, the clay soil in our area made it a crisis. I remember waterlogging and browsing all over our farm to extend inside my two houses. We were rendered homeless and even my last born got sick due to the cold that we were in."

"My son was involved in a joined business with a relative in a nearby market. Until the year 2015, the business had been doing well until they both got themselves in huge loans that the business could not payback. The business went down and I was forced to settle the debt of amount KES300000 from my ECDE salary and since I couldn't afford it, I was forced to sell a piece of land to pay it off. To me, this was the biggest hardship I have ever faced in my life."
