"With the only cow I had been having, I have always experienced dry seasons where I was forced to buy milk from the neighborhood. This struggle had been pushing me to think about how best I can obtain another lactating cow and has never been possible until recently when I received the transfers. I managed to obtain one at KES30000 and am now feeling covered as I will be alternating their breeding schedule through Artificial Insemination. I also had a new house that needed a new piece of furniture. I spent KES 12000 on chairs and a table making the interior part of the house looks good at the moment. I also obtained a medium-sized water tank that will be useful in collecting and holding clean water meant for drinking since the water fetched from the rivers around are not clean enough exposing us to the risk of waterborne diseases. I am also glad that I used the small remaining amount in obtaining clothing and enough foodstuff for my family of three."

"The thought of relieving my son of the stress of traveling back and forth from the school in search of school fees filled me with lots of joy when I received the first transfer. I had been struggling to make him comfortable in school but the lack of a reliable source of income could not fully satisfy that. I felt relieved on receiving the confirmation message of that transfer as I had been equally disturbed as my son. Since I had all plans in place, I had to stop all I was doing on my farm that morning, moved to the nearest town, and withdrew that money before making the payment to the school."

"As a single mother to my three kids, it has been hard meeting all the financial obligations both within and out of my household. Starting an extra project with the small amount I had been getting from my groceries was so hard that I had always been left with dreams that could not be realized. I am glad that I had been able to make great differences with the transfers, and more so installation of pipes that are currently conveying water to my doorstep."

"Until a few weeks ago, my daughter and I lived in a small grass-thatched mud house. It was old and falling apart. This made me anxious about our safety. So I prioritised the construction of a new, one-bedroom house when I received the transfer from GiveDirectly. The construction material including timber, bricks, iron sheets and labour costs amounted to KES 49,000. I also spent KES 5,000 on paying for school fees for my daughter. My greatest wish for her is to stay in school and get a good education so she can live a good quality of life."

"I usually burn coal to support my family, but due to the heavy down pull of rain I am not able to burn coal now. There is a river right near the community and I have to cross it before going to my coal bed. The river is currently full and I can't crossed to go on my farm. It is really a problem for me now."

"About three months ago I decided to go into the bush to cut some stakes for the construction of my house but I don't have money to pay people bring the stakes to town. I am an operation patient so I was advised to avoid some hard work such as lifting weight. Up to now I still live with my mother in law. If Give directly send me any money my first and foremost plan is to pay people bring my stakes to town and start the construction of my house."

"The major thing here is how to provide food for the home. Because as explained earlier, the price of coal has dropped. So it is not giving me more money any more to be abe to buy food for the home regularly. Also, before the coal production is through and ready for the market, I have already credited more money against it. As such, when those I credited from deduct their credit after sale, I am left with very little amount. And that amount left with me can not keep the father going for me than one week."
