"I spent part of my first transfer on buying some bricks worthy of KES 10000, specifically for the construction of a permanent kitchen and a granary. The previous one had collapsed due to the harsh climatic condition and most of my properties got damaged and I felt there was a need to construct a new one. I also bought a goat at KES 2700 which will serve as the living asset that I will depend on. I also spent KES 10000 of the money on buyng enough foodstuffs like maize flour, vegetable, and cereals. With the remaining amount of money, it will be for the completion of the construction for my kitchen since the laborer has not been around."

"I am an expert in making cakes for wedding parties and even birthdays and I aspired to build a business out of this. Due to lack of capital, I was just doing this at my house with very few orders from customers. The income was however not enough for expansion. When I received the transfer, my dream of starting a cake-baking business was fulfilled. I purchased the necessary equipment for cake making and decorations and mixer attachments. I also rented a place in our trading centre for my business with the transfer. My life is currently different because I now have my place where customers can visit and make orders. Because of this, my income has greatly increased as compared to when I was doing this business at home. I am grateful to GiveDirectly for making my dream come true."

"Receiving this money means alot for me and my household as it means that now I Will be able to buy enough food as I did not harvest enough food during the last harvest season due to lack of money for fertilizers which resulted in low yields resulting in hunger. I also intend to buy some fertilizers for the next growing season so that I harvest enough food and do not have to starve anymore"

"The dream of being a landowner was almost diminishing since I had no money because of my poverty conditions. I spent KES 15,000 to complete the payment of a piece of land that I had bought by failed to complete due to financial challenges. The seller was threatening to resale it to a different buyer something that worried me a lot. In addition, I spent KES 17, 800 to start a small shop business in my house a job that earns me a profit of KES 300 on average per day. In addition, I spent KES 4,000 to purchase a solar battery that I am using to light my house as well as charge phones for my neighbours at a fee of 15 per phone. I also used KES 7000 to assist my husband in paying off a debt that he owes our neighbour."

"The biggest hardship that I face is food insufficiency. I rely on a small business of trading in chicken eggs. The profits that I get from this business is only KES 100 per day. This is barely enough to buy foodstuffs that I need daily such as; milk, vegetables, maize flour and cooking oil. I feel that I should increase the number of eggs that I trade in to earn about KES 300 per day in profits."

"I spent KES 30000 of my first transfer on buying livestock which include oxen and two goats. I did not have any livestock on my compound since I could not afford to buy them. These are living assets which I can rely on when I am faced with a financial need. I depend on menial jobs and I feel I might not be able to save enough money for my children's fees in the near future. Owning these livestock will help me to raise fees for them. In addition to the livestock, I also spent the transfer on purchasing enough foodstuffs for my family. I bought a 90kg sack of maize and some other cereals that can take us a whole month. Food is currently a challenge to us since we depend on subsistence farming. I have not been able to do farming for almost a year now due to a prolonged drought. I am happy that my family had enough food unlike before when we could skip meals due to lack of money."
