"I spent KES 52000 to build a more spacious house for my family and a granary upon receiving the transfer. We settled on this as a family since the granary we had and the house we were living in was small and not in good condition since its roof was leaking and our farm produce would go bad within a short time. I am glad that from now henceforth, our farm produce will last long since we will be storing them in a good place. Using the remaining KES 3000 I bought some foodstuffs for my family."

"I was at home preparing breakfast when my phone started to ring constantly. I was so nervous because I was not expecting to hear from anyone. But since my children were very hungry I had to focus on what I was doing. After I was done, I asked my helper to check the notifications from my mobile phone. I was so excited after telling me that I had received my cash transfers from GiveDirectly. I immediately opted to share the news with my family members and I remember saying a special prayer for this miraculous gift from this organization."

"I live in a place with poor network coverage and as I was going on with my daily household chores, one of my neighbors came and inquired if I had received my transfer as she had already received hers. It was at this time that I went outside to look for a place with a good network and upon restarting my phone, I received a Mpesa message indicating that the transfer from GiveDirectly had been deposited into my account. I became so happy on seeing this and I started singing praises to God and GiveDirectly as I knew that my plan of buying a piece of land would soon be realized."

"I am a casual laborer doing any available work around the village ranging from working in people's farms and fetching firewood and later selling them. I was at one point very stressed on how to get money to use in paying school fees for my children since they were constantly in and out of school despite being in day schools where we pay less until I resorted to working as a house help for my elder sister. I had to stop working for her last year after the outbreak of Covid that rendered her financially unstable and the struggle of paying school fees for them resurfaced. Currently, I am happy that I was able to pay 80% of their school fees and they're currently doing well in school as they only stayed for a day at home when they had been sent back home. Seeing them wake up early each day to go to school makes my daily life different as it gives me a reason to smile and continue working hard for their sake."

"I had completed the construction of a more decent and spacious house for my family before receiving the transfer and had started living in it though I had not fully furnished it. It was very cold at night since the walls are made of timber and there were some tiny spaces at the joints. On receiving my transfer, I decided to spend KES 7500 to buy some plywood for the wall and I am happy that we now live in a very warm house. Also, I spent KES 5000 to clear fee arrears for my children, KES 12000 to buy a cupboard, and KES 15000 to buy new poles to use in fencing my farm since the existing fence had collapsed and my livestock had been destroying my crops. In addition to this, I used KES 2500 to construct a shade for the water tank that I had already bought, KES 9200 on clothes, a blanket, and a three-seater seat, KES 2000 to buy drugs that the doctor had prescribed them for me after my check-up and used the remaining KES 4300 on food."

"We do not have adequate food because we bought last year's fertilizers so late and it was not enough for our maize field, this resulted in coming out with low yields and here we are, we are eating only once a day"

"Since I was married ten years ago, I have been sleeping in a very poor environment. My house was very small with an old leaky roof. Life used to be tough during the rainy season because we had to seek shelter from our neighbors and relatives which were very embarrassing at some point. With my five family members getting someone to accommodate us all was very difficult. Therefore we sometimes had to opt to be rained on in our houses till the rain stops. My children were always attacked by some cold-related disease and harmful insects which was the worst experience ever. I have been trying to make ends meet but I couldn't able to raise the funds for the construction of a new house. Beng the family breadwinner, with a very low income of KES 100 per day, which was only for my family's daily meal. My family and I are all happy and thankful because were it not for the help I got from this organization, we would still be living a miserable life."
