"I had gone to the market and was accompanied by one of my neighbors. While we were still shopping, she inquired if I had seen anything interesting on my phone. It was at this time that I decided to check and know what she was speaking of and my heart was filled with joy on seeing that I was KES 55000 richer. I decided to withdraw the cash the same day instead of incurring extra costs later coming to withdraw them and to also buy some food items for celebration purposes for the good news."

"I am a farmer mainly growing maize, potatoes, onions, tomatoes, and sweet potatoes for the past 10 years. Maize has not been doing well of late due to prolonged drought and pests and diseases. I used to harvest over 20 bags of maize in an acre piece of land but this has been reduced to just 5 bags in one acre because of the above stated reasons. I am contemplating moving away from growing maize and venturing into other commodities yet it provides us with the staple food."

"In 2019 we started a project of building our 3 bedroom house, unfortunately the money we had was insufficient and we weren't able to finish construction. We moved into the house soon after it was roofed but the windows of the house and the floor is still unfinished. I plan on using KES 40,000 in buying of cement, windows and furnishings. I also plan on using KES 35,000 on purchasing a dairy cow and I will sell the milk to get extra income."

"In my opinion, GiveDirectly is doing everything well, especially the freedom to choose what challenge we need to address without it telling us what to do or what not to. This is the best thing that ever happened in my life and I am so proud and grateful."

"Receiving this money means improved housing and shelter. My family is still young and hoping to expand someday. I have only one house which I also use as a kitchen, sometimes it gets smoky and may not be comfortable to cook in presence of visitors. So when I get this money I will use KES 50000 to build a more spacious house. My wife is expectant and she is due by January. So I will spend the remaining amount to purchase clothing, food for her and the baby and pay for the hospital bill after delivery."

"I have one cow whom I depend on for milk production. This cow yield four liters a day. I sell three liters of it at KES 33. I am getting old and no longer has the energy to go to the farm to dig. So when I get this money I will buy another dairy cow to increase milk production and increase income. I estimate it to cost around KES 45000 . Our area is prone to drought and food crops do not yield much but with some income, I will be able to buy food for my family."
