Brenda
received a $485 initial payment.
"I operate a posho mill business and I had a client when I received a message notification on my phone. I checked its contents afterward and my heart was filled with joy on seeing the Mpesa message. This news made me know that I would finally build a more decent house for the family. I waited patiently till evening to share the good news with the remaining members of my family and my children were the happiest, citing that they would finally have their privacy and sleep without any disturbances."

Alice
received a $485 initial payment.
"I did not have a dairy cow of my own when GiveDirectly came for enrollment. This always made me help some people raise their cows and enjoy free milk in return. Some people would at times take back their assets anytime they wished and there was nothing I could do. On receiving my transfer, I spent KES 35000 to purchase a dairy cow and I am happy that I have an asset that I can rely on. Also, I spent KES 8000 on medication since I was sick and used the remaining amount on food."

Paul
received a $485 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my daily life is the new ownership of a piece of land that I bought after receiving the first transfer. The whole piece looks big at the moment and I am planning to fence around it as I look forward to putting it in use once I have made a clear decision whether to farm on it or use it as a grazing field."

Kadzo
received a $485 initial payment.
"I spent part of my first transfer on buying building materials which include iron sheets at KES 3800, building poles at KES 6800, nails, timber, and gave the mason KES 8000 his labor charge. I had to prioritize the issue of housing becasue the previous one was in a poor state and almost collapsing. Also, it was very small in size and It could not accommodate all my eight family members and at times my children had to seek shelter from my neighbors. I also cleared school fees for my son who was in his final year in college and we were stuck since I had no idea where I would acquire the fees needed. With the remaining amount tog money, I bought foodstuffs that would sustain us for at least two weeks."

"With the transfer i received from Givedirectly, i was able to buy two bundles of zinc. Portion of my transfer was used to pay for stakes and the balance was used to buy food for my house and transport myself back to Gonpo town.
