"Lately, I have been feeling very low. My family has so many unmet needs. My children do not have decent clothes, I do not have a job since Covid took a toll on us. We struggle to get food and on more than one occasion have gone to bed hungry. I hope things will look up soon."

"With old age, I can only support my granddaughter using the money I get from Inua Jamii Cash transfer, a programme that supports the elderly and vulnerable. I have since accumulated fee areas amounting to 5000 KES. Getting a certificate means clearing all the fee balance in school. This is a hindrance to getting her certificates now that she is in her last year in primary school."

"I used to be in small businesses of charcoal and firewood but I had to stop. My daughter gave birth. I am the one who takes care of her child as she works as a house help in Likoni. She makes KES4,000 and this is not enough to cater to our needs. I hope to get back into business soon to improve this situation."

"I live in a house that is not hospitable. The roof was blown off by strong winds. Every time it rains, I have to seek refuge in my neighbor's house, together with my wife and children. I feel humiliated to pass the night on the floor but I have no other option. I will talk to my two wives. I think if we can all agree to put our transfers together, we can build a big house that will accommodate all nine of us comfortably. This project would cost approximately KES 80,000. In a year, we should be able to build and move in if all goes well."

"As you can see, our house is on the verge of falling apart. My nights are restless because I keep thinking about what would happen if it just fell with my family fast asleep. The sad truth is, I am not financially capable of putting up another house right now. I am grateful for Give Directly. I will divide the money as it comes to buy iron sheets and food. I am also grateful that my husband will also be a beneficiary so the money we get will enable us to do some rear works faster."

"With age, comes wisdom and a bunch of health issues. Currently, my eyesight is quite bad. It gets blurry to a point I have difficulty walking around because I am afraid of falling. My ears are very itchy. I am not sure whether it's an allergic reaction or a more serious problem. My children have promised to send me some money soon so that I can get medical attention at Mchekenzi Dispensary."

"When the time to sleep nears, my heart beats a little faster. Not because I am excited, but because it means I'll pass it on the floor, on a mat then wake up with terrible body aches, and I sneeze a lot from all the dust I inhale all night. I look forward to sleeping comfortably soon. I cannot wait for the experience."
