"Receiving this money will enable me to save for my children's education. I have two children who attend high school, one that is set to join college and another one who will complete primary school in November. I am so fixed in terms of paying school fees since the money that my husband gets from his motorcycle taxi cannot meet all this. I plan on settling arrears for my two children in secondary school amounting to KES 14,000 and then buying a cow with KES 35,000 of the money. It will be easier to pay school fees gradually from the money that I will get from selling milk while also saving some of it."

"I have a new goal which is to buy goats and dairy cows and I am hopeful that this will be achieved very soon. I have been thinking of having them because of the many advantages for instance, with the cows I will be getting plenty of liters of milk which will be for my family's usage, and the remaining amount I will sell to the dairy shops. Again, with the goats, once they multiply, I will be able to sell one of two and sort out any kind of emergency that might occur."

"I saved some money in a group that we have as teachers that enabled me to buy a cow. This has brought me joy because, in no time, I will be able to get milk from it."

"I depend mainly on subsistence farming to buy food and pay for my children's education. The amount of money that farming generates is not consistent owing to insufficient rains and the small piece of land that we own. Receiving this money will boost my income because on top of acquiring 0.1 pieces of land with the transfer, I will buy another cow to boost the amount of milk that I get. I will be able to expand my area of farming and this, will in turn increase the income that I get from selling the produce."

"I have two small children that have to drink milk and since I do not have a cow, I have to buy them milk for KES 45 daily. This is expensive for me because I do not have a stable job. Receiving this money will be a relief to me since I will be able to buy a dairy cow for milk. I have plans of building another house since the one that I have is the kitchen and the main house. The reason for constructing another house is because the smoke from the kitchen is not good for my six old month baby's health."

Lilian
received a $460 second payment.
"Upon withdrawing the second transfer money, I first bought a bed and a mattress for KES 9500.00 since I did not have a bed at all. For a while I have been sleeping on the floor. I also brought two cows for KES 20000.00. I opted to buy the cows because I already have goats that I bought using the first transfer. Thereafter I saved some amount with an aim of taking my child to school when the schools open. My child will be joining form one, so i saw it prudent to save the money for him."

"I spent part of my second transfer on clearing the medical bill of KES 12000. A few months ago, I was diagnosed with first-stage cancer and I did not have enough resources to fund the medications. The money came at the correct time and I believe this was God sent. It still feels like a miracle to me because of the pains that I have been experiencing I could barely sleep at night, no appetite. I am happy to mention that the drugs have been functioning so well and I can now even handle minor house chores. Also I bought three goats and a dairy cow for a total of KES 25000. I settled for them because they require minimal supervision and their pastures are readily available. I am hopeful that very soon I will have many of them. With the remaining amount of money, I bought food for my seven family members. My husband has been the breadwinner who depended on odd jobs with meager income and most days, we used to skip meals."

Juliana
received a $461 second payment.
"When I received my transfer, I saw the need for expanding my house because of my family size which is growing. At the moment I have six children. GiveDirectly cash came as a huge relief in my life. This is because I was able to continue with the construction work, unlike before when I was unable to expand the house due to financial constrain since I depended on selling milk and farming which is not enough. Thus, I used a sum of KES 15,000. In addition to that, I bought a dairy cow, worth KES 30,000, to cut down on the cost of buying milk daily and also for business purposes where I would be able to sell the milk. Finally, I bought foodstuffs and clothes. The support from GiveDirectly impacted my life amazingly thus I am so happy that indeed my life has changed into a better one."

Sellina
received a $477 second payment.
"I used KES 30000 to buy a dairy cow and used the remaining amount to complete a house that I had built using the first transfer and I also remained with some that helped me in buying chicken for rearing. Dairy farming is one of the main economic activities that we rely on here at home since the climate is favourable for the same. With these livestock at least I can be sure to put food on the table for my children."

Mary
received a $477 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my daily life is that the cash has empowered me to own livestock ( dairy cows and goats). This is a dream come true to me because this is what I have been aspiring to have for quite some time but because of the financial hardships that I have been undergoing, this was not achievable. I am a widow of three and my health status is not that good. I have been on bed rest for q while as a result of the accident that I was involved in some years back. I have therefore been depending on my children for my daily meals. I thought having these dairy cows will be of help to myself and my family because currently I have been taking white tea and drinking milk after every milk courtesy of GiveDirectly. I plan to start a business selling the milk to my neighbors and generate an income. At least I will no longer have to strain whenever I want to see the doctor for my monthly check-up. Also providing for my basic needs will no longer be a struggle."
