"My main objective has been educating my two children who are still in primary school. The biggest difference in my daily life is that ever since I started receiving transfers from GiveDirectly,I will be able to use the funds to educate my children and am planning to help my wife improve our roof before the rainy season.I am also planning to buy a cow which can be used for ploughing in future and am sure it will be quite an investment for a farmer like me."

Jumwa
received a $476 second payment.
"After spending the second transfer as per my plans, I developed another goal of keeping cows for milk. This idea came as a result of seeing how I have been spending a lot of money in buying milk for my children. If I get money, I will buy a cow for milk purposes. The milk will serve both for sale and family use. I am quite sure that I will get a good market from the locals since they rely on buying some milk for their families."

"As a family, the main challenge that we are facing is the inadequacy of tillable land. The only 0.5 acres of land that we own is just enough to accommodate our homestead and our cow. So, we have no space to do crop farming, something that makes us strain to get food in our household by hiring land for crop farming. As a mother, I am constantly worried that I might fail to get land to hire or seeds to plant, hence, exposing my family to hunger."

Grace
received a $460 second payment.
"My next goal in life is to purchase a dairy cow that I will rear with the one that I already have. By doing this, I will be selling some of the milk to earn an income that I can use in supporting my family. I am glad that GiveDirectly has enabled me to own a water tank that I am currently using to harvest and store clean water for domestic use. Currently, I do not have the finances to use in achieving this but I believe that God will make a way very soon."

Jumwa
received a $26 second payment.
"My life changed for the worse 12 years ago after the passing on of my husband. Raising my four children alone has not been a walk in the park. Before my husband’s demise, I had over 30 goats and three dairy cows. With no source of income to take care of my children, it forced me to sell many goats. I used the money I got from selling the goats to pay school fees and buy food and clothes. In times of need, resort to borrowing money from my relatives who talk ill about me. Currently, I have 5 goats remaining and my biggest fear is to lose all of them and remain with none. It is for this reason that when I received my transfer of KES 3000; I spent it all on buying a nanny goat. Buying this goat gives me hope I will accumulate enough wealth once they multiply in numbers. "

Wilson
received a $476 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my life is that I have been able to acquire a live asset which is an investment to me. It would have taken me a long period of time to save towards the purchase of the dairy cow and I am glad that GiveDirectly made it possible within a short time. I will forever remain grateful to them for the impact they have made in my life and that of my family at large."

"My husband is epileptic and cannot work at all. He takes monthly medication that cost as around KES 500 a month. I look for casual jobs to feed my family while providing medication to my husband. Life has been difficult to me and Give Directly money will be a blessing since it will provide medication. I will also buy a cow to provide milk for my family. We are so happy as a family."

"I remember at the beginning of the year, I was able to convince domestic animals dealers to allow me to trade in my goats for cows at an agreed rate. I was happy this went through and I acquired my cows. From only two I now have seven plus those that I also bought and my stock keep growing."

"It's quite fulfilling to be able to progress economically when you just started from scratch. I started off by raring chicken which multiplied, then I sold them all to buy goats. At some points I was also able to sell the goats and buy cows. I now have four cows that I'm hiding from my husband by keeping them at my maternal home. I felt when recently when my son was joining high school because without the help of my husband I was able to sell two to raise the fees plus all the requirements."
