"Receiving this money means an increase in the income that we earn as a household. I depend mostly on subsistence farming to earn a living but most recently it has been hard to grow most profitable crops due to unpredictable weather patterns. This made me think about alternative ways of getting an income and I have been thinking of raising dairy cows. With these transfers therefore we would like to spend KES. 80,000 to buy two dairy cows and we hope that from the sale of milk we shall be able to earn at least KES.10,000 monthly. This will be the highest amount of income we have ever earned as an household because at the moment through crop cultivation we get an average of KES. 4000 monthly."

"The transfer has brought a very big difference in my life and that of my family. I managed to buy another more productive cow. The cow is going to help me in the future when it calves since I will be able to have enough milk that my children can consume and I can sell some and get income. I also managed to till my land and plant which I had left for a while since I didn't have the money to do so."

"The transfer has brought a very big difference into our lives as a family. This is because we now have another cow that is supplying us with milk for our consumption. As a result, we are no longer incurring the cost of buying milk like before. We also managed to buy maize for our consumption which is going to push us for a while before it gets finished. I have thus managed to save some money that I make from my business since the food expenses have been reduced."

"We spent KES 40000 of our recent transfer on buying a piece of land. The piece of land was being sold at KES 50000 but we convinced the owner to allow us to pay KES 40000 with a promise to pay the remaining amount once we get the next transfer. We bought two points of an acre. We bought the land because we wanted land of our own. We are still living on our father's land and our family size is big. The land is still being controlled by our father and hence one does not have the freedom to till and plant anything he wants. We have been meaning to buy a piece of land of our own but we were not in a position to since we didn't have the money. I am a carpenter and I at times get hired by some schools to do roofing in their structures. The money that I usually get paid is little and is only enough to buy food and at times use some to pay school fees for my child. We are thus glad because of this program that GiveDirectly came up with for our village. Other than that, we also spent KES 7000 on buying a goat. We bought it so that we can have a source of milk for our consumption. We do not have a cow of our own and hence we have been relying on the milk that we are supplied with from home. With the remaining transfer amount, we spent it on buying food. Thank you so much GiveDirectly for your support."

"The transfer brought a very big difference in our lives as a family. Our livelihoods changed for the better since we got the things that we didn't have before, that is, a cow. We will thus no longer incur the cost of buying milk when it calves. We are also glad because we managed to till our land and plant. The children are also happy because they got new clothes to wear. Thank you so much GiveDirectly for helping us."

"We used the money to buy two dairy cows worth Kes 30000 and used another KES 20000 to improve my business of selling fuel. The money saw me increase my stock of fuel from 20 litres to 60 litres and I can't stop being happy considering the amount of profit that I now make. We can now gather for the needs of our children comfortably than we could do before the transfers."

received a $26 second payment.
"I have a family comprising two children and four grandchildren, who are all under my care. I am weak and can no longer work because of my old age. The only asset we currently depend on is two dairy cows that survived the prolonged effects of drought. My eldest son sells the milk from the cows daily and the money we earn is used to buy food to feed us once. The milk we get from the cow is very little because there is no green grass to feed the cows because of the effects of the drought. As a result, my son has struggled to put food on the table for the entire family. Therefore, when I received my transfer, I spent the KES 3000 on buying 12 kg of maize flour, 2kg of maize, 2kg of sugar, and some vegetables as food for the family after surviving one meal per day for an entire month."

"We spent most of our recent transfer on buying a cow. The cow was going for KES 43000 but we pleaded with the owner to allow us to first pay KES 30000 and later on finish paying for the balance. We decided to buy the cow because we didn't have one. The one cow that we had died. We have hence been incurring the cost of buying milk where we usually buy a liter every day. This amount of milk is little and it is not enough for the children to consume. They have hence been suffering due to a lack of milk for their consumption. We had thus made plans that when we get the self-help group merry-go-round contributions in July, we were going to buy one. We are hence glad that GiveDirectly made this dream of ours come true earlier than we had expected. Other than that, we also bought four bags of maize for our consumption at KES 3700 per bag. We also took another KES 8000 and we used it to pay off a debt. We had lost our mother a few days before the transfer was sent and we were still having some debts that we had not settled. With the remaining amount, we used it to buy clothes for our five children. We are thus so much grateful to GiveDirectly for their big help."

"We spent KES 33000 of our recent transfer on buying another cow. We bought it because we didn't have a source of milk and hence we have been incurring the cost of buying some. The cow that we have been having is a heifer, it has not yet calved. We usually buy 2 liters every day at KES 50 per liter. This is quite expensive for us because we do not have stable sources of income. I have a motorcycle and I usually do the business of transporting people and goods from one place to another. The money that I make most of it usually goes to the purchase of food, essential household items, and daily milk. We have hence not been in a position to buy a lactating cow. We also took another KES 5000 and we used it to buy barbed wire for fencing our land. This way the cows will be restrained from going to the farm and destroying çrops. With the remaining transfer amount, we used it on buying clothes for the children and maize for our consumption."
