"The biggest difference in my daily life is that I was able to invest in a dairy cow. I feel happy and contented to have achieved my goal in a short period. I no longer worry about buying milk daily meaning that I would be able to save up the money. In addition to that our health general would be nourished."

"When I was promised the unconditional transfer, I thought of purchasing a dairy cow to add to the one that I had to increase milk production. I knew that this would help me cut down on the cost of buying milk daily. In addition that it would also generate extra income for me. Thus, I used KES 40,000 on purchasing a cow. I then used the remaining amount on foodstuffs. I am happy and grateful to have achieved so much in a short time."

Mercy
received a $475 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my life today is that I now own a dairy cow. In addition to that, I was able to start poultry farming. My children are happier because they get to enjoy a surplus of milk and eggs. I plan to sell some of the eggs to my neighbours in future where I would generate extra income. I am so thankful for the support that empowered and impacted our lives amazingly."

"My phone was charging that morning, I remember vividly that it was around 7 am. When I heard a message notification. I decided to go check out who could have texted me that morning. It was a message indicating that I have received KES 55,000 from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy because that was the highest amount I have ever received. My family members were so happy too. I stayed for one week then I went to withdraw the money. I knew I would be able to buy a dairy cow."

received a $475 initial payment.
"I spend KES 200 on school fees for my two children in secondary school. They used to be sent home and this was affecting their performances. Currently, they are studying well without being disturbed. I spent KES 25,000 on purchasing dairy cows. This has cut the daily cost of buying milk. I save the money that I could have used to buy milk for other household items. The rest of the money I spent on food and clothes for my family members. I am so grateful for the support."

Karabu
received a $475 initial payment.
"Buying the cow has made a big difference in my daily life because I am now optimistic about having an alternative source of income through the sale of milk. When the drought struck our village, I struggled to provide for my family because I depended heavily on one source of income which was farming. Now that I have the dairy cow, I am assured of having more income that will help me in catering to my family’s needs."

"The biggest difference in my daily life is the purchase of a dairy cow that has been providing my family with an adequate supply of milk. It has been a good feeling for my family in that I am no longer struggling to buy but instead selling the surplus to the neighborhood as an additional source of income."

"I am a father of six and a maize vendor for the past five years. From maize vending, I get to feed and school my kids. On a day I make a profit of KES 200 to KES 600 on a good day.
When I received my transfers, I topped up and bought two heifers at KES 30,000 each.
This is because once they reproduce I intend to sell them for an additional piece of land to the one acre of land I inherited from my parents.
Additionally, I had desired to buy another dairy cow for the past two years but couldn't afford it. This is because the one I had usually produces 6 liters of which I sell three liters. And during dry spells, I am forced to buy milk which is quite costly hence the need for an alternative milk source."

"I am so worried about the condition of my house, the rains are here with us and I fear the walls may come falling. My priority is to buy one or two bags of cement and attend to this crisis before I start counting losses. Next will be to buy a nice bed and a mattress. I have always desired to sleep in a modern bed and get to enjoy my sleep just like everyone else.
It will also be prudent for me to think of investments, I will buy about six goats that are about 20,000 KES, and raise them, and when they have kids I will then exchange them for a cow."
