"My father contacted someone who wanted a person to ride a motorcycle and pay back his money, so he brought me the motorcycle to run with an agreement to pay every week. I think that was the only happiness I got over the past months."

received a $500 initial payment.
"I had started my day normally, waking up early in the morning to attend to my usual motorcycle business where I had been ferrying people and goods to the marketplace all day. Having worked the previous night till late, I had to leave my phone charging that morning hoping to pick it later little did I know that I will be busy all day. I could not realize that the transfer was in but the rate at which people were calling me over in need of my motorbike services to town was alarming. I was lucky then to have an alternative phone and could not get back home. On arrival later that evening, I was greeted by the great news on my phone. At that point, I got the reason behind the high traffic towards the shopping center all day. Everyone in the village had received the transfer and was moving to withdraw and at least start shopping what they had planned for. I was so happy to find mine safe in my account and had to wait till the next morning to withdraw. We made our plans clear with my wife, and together we moved out in the morning to try accomplishing all that we needed first for our construction work."

"The money will help me to buy motorcycle and a piece of land.
I live with my wife and my 1 year old son. Together we live on at my wife's village were we build a house. I have a piece of land which we farm and based on rains we sometimes harvest 15 to 20 bags. Mostly those bags are used for consumption and at times we use part of the maize to pay for people working in our farm land. Also we sale part of the maize to buy fertilizer for the next farming season.
I am primary school teacher by professional. My monthly salary is K100000 ($95). Mostly I used the money to buy household items such as food, clothes and other basic needs. I have no savings.
I will use the money to buy motorcycle that will be used for my household. In additional I will buy a piece of land that will be used for farming."

"In my opinion, GiveDirecly has done well by sending us unconditional cash transfers that have improved our lives a great deal. We have set up businesses, built decent houses and fed our families.
There isn't anything that GiveDirecly has not done well."

Benard
enrolled.
"I dropped out of school due to the financial constraints my parents had. Being a motorcycle rider was the only option I had because farming has been affected by the prolonged drought in this area. I was hired by a teacher to ride this bike and I get a weekly wage of KES 800 at most. Although I stay alone this amount is spent on food and clothing and hence I am unable to save anything for the future. This makes me much worried and afraid to start a family because am barely able to provide for myself. Financial constraint is the biggest hindrance in my life."

At the moment, a lot has really changed, and have constructed a new house that is spacious enough for my growing family of seven that has been the biggest difference in my daily life. Currently, I am in the final stages of construction a sign that we are soon moving in so that we can demolish the old kitchen as we transition to the new house."
