How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
After receiving and utilizing the second I developed some goals one being an entrepreneurial goal. Since I have a plot of land at the trading center, I have a vision of building some rental houses. So, once doors open and I get some money this will be my number one priority because rental houses are now the leading and lasting investments in our area.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The essence of sending us the money directly was well thought of. This money has helped us a lot to settle different needs that we were having. As at now we are happy because we settled a good number of the needs which were bothering us. In my opinion, I feel some of the policies of the organization should be amended. The criteria of registering only the people who have houses should be revised because some deserving people were left out yet it wasn’t their fault not to have houses but poverty is the one which has made them unable to have the houses. Therefore I urge if possible some investigations to be done to determine the reason as to why someone doesn’t have a house.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon withdrawing the money, I bought a cow for KES 20000.00. The reason for buying the cow was for milk purposes for my family. I also bought 3 gala goats at KES 6000.00 each. The reason for buying these high breed goats is because the other types of goats have a slow growth rate. Again these gala goats have a good price when it comes to selling. A mature he-goat goes for KES 12000.00. After buying the livestock, I used the remaining amount in crop farming. I usually do subsistence farming for my family use.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was exactly 9 in the morning when I was just relaxing after taking breakfast when my mobile phone started to vitae so loudly. At that moment I was somehow surprised and curious, therefore I decided to ask one of the kids to confirm for me what the notifications were all about. On checking, he realized that it was a message from Segovia Technology, alerting me that I had finally received my first cash transfer. I was so excited and I wish you could see how we reacted since it was like dream for us.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Having the goats that I am currently keeping in my compound have bought the biggest difference in my daily life. Before the coming of GiveDirectly, I have been yearning to at least own one but I could afford to purchase and this was due to the financial constraints that I was facing. Currently, three have started reproducing which is evident that within a short time, I will have more of them. Being a taxi driver with a family of four, it has never been that easy to make all the ends meet especially on the issue of school fees for my kids. Therefore I believe these are the best assets for me that will boost my children's education journey. Whenever they will be sent home for fees, I will be able to sell one or two offspring and send them back to school. This will for sure be of great help to me since it will have to ease the burden. I am currently contented and thankful becasue I will no longer be stressed up either my children on the issue of school fees.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a bigger fraction of my first transfer on buying livestock ( ten goats) at a total of KES 40000. I have been yeaning to own them for years but I couldn't afford even one becasue they were too expensive and I have been relying on odd jobs for my family's daily needs. I settled for goats becasue their pastures if readily available and easy to maintain meaning I can take care of them and work on some other stuff. I also cleared school fees for my two children who are in their secondary schools KES 10000. To me, this has been a major challenge and I have been depending on the government bursaries with was at times, not a guarantee. Therefore having cleared the arrears makes me feel so grateful and relieved. With the remaing amount, I bought bough foodstuffs for my family ad other household items.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
With the money from give directly, I will start a buying and selling of goats business. There is a market 5 kilometres from my home town where I can sell the goats. With the profit I will be able to provide basic needs and pay school fees for my kids.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I keep goats in my compound, last month two goats were delivered. I am happy to see my livestock increasing. This convinces me of future investments for my kids.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Being without a stable source of income has challenged me. Am not able to pay school fees and provide better shelter for my family.
