How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
After achieving all the plans that I had with both transfers, I now have a goal of venturing into a maize business. Currently, I work as a mason and am saving towards starting up the business so that it can be an additional income for catering for my family bills.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Givedirectly did well by allowing us to participate in this project which boosted our living standards. I have no complaints since all the processes we were informed by the officers were adhered to.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent Kshs.30,000 buying two young calves. This was an additional investment to my existing livestock. This will later multiply and produces adequate milk for both consumption and also getting extra for sale hence more income. I also bought two sheep at Kshs.15,000 which will also multiply since it gives birth twice a year hence can use to settle school fees for my children. With the remaining amount, I used to purchase goods and clothing for all my family members.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was alone in the house that early morning when I received a notification message on my phone from GiveDirectly. On reading it, I had to run out to my parents to confirm whether they had received the same as I could not believe it at first. They too were e equally surprised when I told them but when they confirmed, everyone was so excited and had to withdraw mine the same day. I had pans in place and could not wait to see them commencing as I started obtaining the missing household goods on my first purchases.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life after receiving my first transfer is the construction of a spacious kitchen likely to serve me and my future family for a long time. I had been looking forward to such a development but the inability to save due to the low income I was getting in my fans could not allow me to make it happen. I am now grateful that even though I am living alone, I have a well-built home.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Living alone in my house since I don't have a family yet had not been that hard for me. On receiving the transfer, budgeting for the same was not that hard since I had no one who would differ in my choices. I spentKES25000 on obtaining iron sheets and paying for the labor force on the construction of a new kitchen. I had only one bigger house that I had been sleeping in and could not cook inside as I had been using firewood that emit a lot of fumes. I also managed to invest in livestock after obtaining a bull at KES24000. I will be rearing it for some months before I sell at a bit higher price enough to buy two heifers. With the remaining amount, I bought my clothing and also foodstuff. I am grateful that I had been able to accomplish a lot with just the first transfer and looking forward to doing a lot more after receiving the coming transfer.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am an orphan .I have been involved with casual jobs to try and survive. My mother passed on long time ago when I was class three. Also,my father died 13 years ago. Life has been unbearable and a struggle for us . Growing up ,I have been staying with my elder sister in her house .She has children and I saw it as a burden to provide for her children and myself ,that is why I decided to fend for myself in my house. I dropped in form one because of lack of school fees and started doing casual jobs which I still do to date. I intend to buy a dairy cow ,build a kitchen house and marry . As you can see I have reached marriageable age ,I have always wanted to marry but because of lack of income I have not been able. The dairy cow will cost USD 4500,the kitchen construction will cost around UD 3000 ,the rest of the money I will use to buy household items for use.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My typical day is that when I wake up in the morning I set out to look for casual jobs. Mostly I am done by around 4pm. It's from 5pm in the evening when Iam happy ,this is because I will be done with the jobs if at all I was lucky to get one and by that time I will have been paid my wages for the day .
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I have been faced by a myriad of challenges . My mother passed when I was in class three,my grand mother took us to stay with her .I would go to school then during lunch break whenever I could come home for lunch most of the time I will find none. So going back to school on an empty stomach was really hard .My upbringing was not good ,I didn't get the best education like other kids .As I have told you I dropped in form one ,If I had an opportunity to further study,my ambition was to become a nurse. My dream diminished at an early age.
