How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My pit latrine is almost collapsing, which has been caused by the ongoing rains. My children and I have ceased to use it since it might fall and damage us physically. Sharing the toilet with my neighbors has never been my thing; therefore, there is a need to construct another one as soon as next month.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
This organization has generally done a good and unique job that deserves applause. It has never happened before, not only in my household but even in the entire region. Being offered unconditional cash, which is nonrefundable. Also, the officers were the best since they made sure that they educated us enough in line with their operation mode. I haven't seen things that need to be improved so far.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My husband passed away many years ago, and by then we already had children who now have children. I am so grateful that my family is growing as the days go by. I must mention that my children have been taking care of me ever since, despite their financial hardship. They made sure that I never lacked basic needs. Therefore, after receiving my transfers, I decided to clear the $200 balance for my granddaughter, who is in secondary school. I believe this will ease the burden on my son since he has been struggling to raise the fees. Also, my granddaughter will study peacefully without any disturbance. Also, I purchased two goats for $80, and I believe that once they reproduce, I will be able to sell the offspring and attend to the emergency. To add on t, because of my advanced age, I used the cash to hire someone to prepare my two-acre farm. Initially, I could only utilize a small portion of the farm because I was using my own hands; this would mean that the harvests were very low. I used the remaining money to buy food that I have been taking up to date.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
While in the kitchen in early super preparations, my phone which was on a small kitchen chair vibrated twice. I was curious about the double vibration and thus informed my grandson who was right outside the kitchen to check for me what it was all about. Upon checking, he informed me that I had received the promised transfer from GiveDirectly. I left the cooking preparations and moved out of the kitchen very happy while ululating in happiness for receiving unconditional money according to what we were told in the baraza.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Two main vivid differences are a result of the GiveDirectly transfer. One is the face of my house, initially, it was very rough and not pleasing to the eye. Currently, it looks good and appealing after the plastering and the flooring which GiveDirectly enabled me to do. Secondly, is the availability of food at home. For the last four years of harvesting, we did not harvest anything substantial due to poor rainfall patterns. We struggled as a family to put meals on the table but thanks to GiveDirectly for enabling us through the transfer. Currently, my family has the privilege of changing their diet not like before when all we could do was get carbohydrates.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon getting the transfer, I opted to do some finishing of my house. What triggered me to this, I wanted to have a decent house courtesy of GiveDirectly. Therefore, I used $170 to buy plastering and flooring materials like cement, and sand including the labor charge. Currently, I am very happy and confident because I live in a decent house. Thereafter, I bought a variety of foodstuffs so that my family could be able to change from normal meals to taste the goodness of GiveDirectly. I bought some maize flour, wheat flour, rice, and sugar. For the little amount that remained, I saved it for the upkeep of the family.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
Fulfilling my grandson's dream to pursue his career has always been my desire. An engineer! This is the title he has always admired but due to lack of money, this is yet to come to reality. Although I might not be able to support him in doing the exact course because of the fees challenge, I will spend a big portion of my transfers ($600), to ensure he acquires a relevant certificate that will necessitate him to upgrade to his big dream in the future. The remaining amount will help me to smooth-finish the floor of my house because it is currently made of adobe materials which do not give my house a decent look. Thus, this is generally what receiving this money means to me.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Having lost my husband 2 years ago has still affected me a lot since I am yet to recover from that grief. Despite the loneliness that I am currently experiencing due to this loss, I am grateful to have the company of my grandson who decided to stay with me at home. This has made me feel the meaning of life since I have someone to share stories with. Thus, I consider the presence of my grandson as what has brought me joy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Money is everything, this is what I have recently come to learn. I have a grandson who passed well in his secondary school final exams 4 years ago, but he is yet to join college to pursue his dream career. This has forced him to engage in casual labor to earn little income to support himself, a situation which makes me feel like having wasted my money on school fees. Imagine what I feel as a parent! I am so stressed by this and I am always feeling one day, the financial problem will come to pass and I will have a reason to smile.
