How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My daughter just completed her primary education and it is my aim to see her through her education. I am a farmer and I majorly grow crops for subsistence use and keep dairy cows. I am planning to concentrate on this so that I can ensure a continuous supply of food for my family so that my spouse can concentrate on paying their school fees for our children.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did well by giving us unconditional cash transfers and empowering us to spend on things that benefit us in long term. Because of this, my life has totally changed. I do not have any complaints since GiveDirectly adheres to all processes we had been informed of by the officers.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 10000 from my transfer to complete the construction of a house for my family since I had started building it using my first transfer. We've started living in it and this has given us so much joy as a family. Also, I spent KES 10000 to buy three three-seater seats since we did not have any, KES 20000 on five goats that are an investment to me that will remind me of GiveDirectly always. Using the remaining amount, I bought some food, utensils, and clothes for the family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 9.00 a.m and was tilling my land just next to my homestead when I had a notification message from my phone. When I checked, it was a confirmation of receipt of the Give directly transfer. I was so excited and immediately I called my husband informing him about the same and he was super excited and asked me to go withdraw the money since we already had planned on how to spend it.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is building a house that will enable my children to study in the evening when back from school since before they didn't have a conducive environment. This gives me much joy because the well-lit house with solar lights creates ample environment for them to study hard with no disruptions.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Construction of extra rooms was my priority on my to-do list. After receiving my first transfer, I spent Kshs.22,000 on purchasing all building materials inclusive of labor. I built two extra rooms and would be a bedroom for my boys and the other one could be used for studying since before they didn't have an ample place to study. I am now super excited that they have a well-lit room with solar lights for studying and spending the night. In addition, I spent Kshs.7,500 in purchasing sheep which in the future will lamb and I can sell whenever I have an emergency. I also bought two sacks of maize for my family which will sustain us for a couple of months as we wait for harvesting season. With the remaining amount, I spent on buying furniture and clothes for my children.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means I'll finally own fertile land. My farm is very small and rocky. The place I can farm is very small, I do not harvest much. I plan to purchase a small piece of land elsewhere, where it is a bit fertile so that I can do farming. I have saved up some amount I will top up with this and buy 3 points costing approximately KES 120,000.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest is the afternoon. At this time I'm done with most of my work. My children are back from school I get to bond with them. I get to rest too as my day's work is very tiresome.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial constraints have been the biggest hardship. Within the first two years of my marriage, we had two children. Responsibilities started catching up with us before we could gain any assets. Being casual laborers, these jobs are very unstable. We often went without food or meet other needs.
