In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The selection criteria that Give Directly uses are top-notch. Some organizations have selected us before to receive foreign aid. Because of biasness few people benefit from it. With Give Directly, this is different as everyone eligible to get the funds could receive the funds from our village, which is a good thing.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
At the start of this month, the pit latrine that we used as a toilet collapsed. Because of my poor financial state, I could not build another one. I don’t have a job and neither does my husband. For the past three weeks, we have been using our neighbor’s toilet to help ourselves. The situation has sometimes worsened had no option but to use the bushes to help ourselves out. To put an end to this predicament, I spent KSH 2000 to build a new toilet. I hired some people to dig a new pit. I am now looking forward to using the next transfer to buy some cement and stones so that I can build a good toilet that will be safe and last for long. Besides building the toilet, I spent KSH 1000 to buy food. I am not working because of the poor state of my health. The doctor advised me to stop working and I have since depended on my son who works in Mombasa as a mason. When he gets paid, he sends me money to buy food. When he cannot get a job, I get affected too because I get to sleep hungry.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
During this time I was just lying down taking a nap when I heard a notification on my phone around 10 am. Since my helper was not around I decided to ask my granddaughter to help me check and that's when she gave me the good news. I was very excited because I knew that getting food will not be a challenge for a while.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
In December my family was able to eat and merry unlike in the past Christmas holidays where we have never been celebrating due to lack of finances.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I received KES 1200 after deducting KES 1850 for the phone, and since we did not have food in the house I gave my daughter all the money to buy a suck of maize that would push us for a few days.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My house though iron-roofed lacks strong pillars. This has not given me peace since my safety is at risk especially during heavy rains. Will use up to 20000KES of my transfers to buy blocks and cement. Besides, we have no lighting, will save 1000 KES of my transfers per month to buy a solar panel. Apart from lightening, I can use the solar energy to charge phones at a pay.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The dawning of a new day without hearing any health complications and of someone being sick within my household is my source of joy. Especially after losing my four children and my husband, I count any day I live as a blessing.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Am a widow, aged 73 years with no shoulders to lean on. My husband and my two sons, who were my breadwinners died some years back (the latest passed three years ago). Was left without hope. Though my brother came to make a shelter for me, he was not able to finish it up. Have not been able to take care of myself and my returnee daughter due to deterioration of strength.
