How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
No, I had wished to improve the condition of my rental house by putting up floor and doors which I have achieved with my transfer. In addition, I bought iron sheets to complete the construction of my house at home. Furthermore, I started a small scale poultry farming a reliable source of income. I am so glad about the transfer.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did well in coming up with the unconditional cash transfer. Through the aid, every household had the right to decide on their own on how to spend the transfer to better their life. I don't see anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 40,000 to purchase 35 iron sheets, this was for the completion of the construction of my house which I had started with my first transfer. This is because the place where I was previously living was very small to fully accommodate all the family members. Furthermore, I had to seek shelter from the neigh whenever I received important guests which was a very embarrassing scenario.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 9:30 AM when I was I was doing laundry when I heard a message tone from my mobile. I asked one of my children to confirm the contents becasue it was so unusual to receive a message at that particular house. After checking, he started smiling and I knew there was some pleasant news. He later told me that there is an Mpesa message from Segovia Technology which state that I have finally received my transfers. Due to the excitement that I had, I remember stated dancing and praising my God for the blessings.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Having the goats have brought the biggest difference in my daily life. From the goats, I am assured of achieving a lot from them because they normally have numerous benefits. Also, they take a shorter time to mature and that their pastures are readily available. These are some of the major reasons why I choose to rear them. I am hopeful they will make me wealthier within a short time considering their short gestation period and the high market demand. Once they multiply I am planning to start a business of buying and selling the goats which will be my main source of income since I am jobless. Having a family of five, it has been a struggle all along in making sure the end meet. Therefore I a positive that the goats will be of great help in achieving most of my goals such as paying school fees for my children. I am hopeful that I will no longer struggle even in meeting my other basic needs on time like I used to do.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying five goats and ten chickens at KES 18000 that I am currently rearing in my compound. This has been my desire to keep them but I couldnt afford them because they are too costly. I later bought some building materials such as buiding poles, timber, nails, and threads. I planned to construct a new house beasue the previous one was very small we couldnt even host a visitor. In addition, I bought a solar panel at KES 3000 which has been of help especially at night. Solar energy is much better than using candles because it is cost-effective. I also paid school fees for my children that are in primary schools. I also saved KES 10000 into my bank account in case of any emergency I will be able to settle it. With the remaining cash, I bought enough food for the family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money from GiveDirectly means I will fulfil my dream of owning a chicken rearing business. I have had a desire of rearing chicken. However this has been impossible due to my poor financial status. I am planning to use KES 50,000 to start my business. This amount will cater for building the structure and buying 30 chicks plus food. I will further use KES 40,000 to construct a three bedroom house for my family. Three rooms will serve me better because one room will be for mine, the other room for my children and the third room for visitors. This is what I have always desired to do and doing this will in the end give me the peace of mind I have always desired.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Morning is the happiest part of my day. Waking up in the morning sounds like a gift to me and this makes me happy. Seeing my children healthy as they go to school makes me happy too.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced in my life is lack of a reliable source of income to sustain my family. We solely rely on the taxi business my husband does in town. The cash he sends home is not sustainable and this has led to suffering. Sometimes we lack on important basic necessities of life such as water, food and clothing.
