How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am elderly, and I spend most of my time at home because I am suffering from hypertension. My current goal is to maintain my health. I rely on the monthly transfers to purchase my medications and make sure I always have a balanced diet. Thanks to these transfers, I am able to receive the necessary treatment without causing a financial burden on my sons, who were previously struggling to raise money for my medication. I am grateful for the assistance I receive.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Prior to joining the program, I faced difficulties meeting my medical expenses. This was due to a lack of the necessary support, which forced me to miss some important checkups and medical appointments also because of my poor financial status. I thus spent my most recent funds on paying for my medical expenses and buying food for myself. My age has brought about several complications, such as arthritis and hypertension, which require constant monitoring by my doctors who visit me at home. I am grateful that I always receive the necessary treatment that I need. With time, I hope to regain my health while still in the program. As advised by my doctors, I always maintain a balanced diet because of the transfers, which has helped me gain some physical strength.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My sole focus revolves around managing my medication and covering my medical expenses. With no one else to depend on, my lifeline is the monthly transfers I receive. As I've reached my senior years, I'm no longer able to work, which makes my monthly check-ups an essential priority. I am deeply appreciative because these transfers also provide for my dietary needs, ensuring I have a well-balanced diet.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
As an elderly individual, I've experienced recurring, stubborn infections that pose a significant challenge to treat. On several occasions, these ailments have necessitated lengthy hospital stays, during which I've grappled with hypertension. I'm currently prescribed medication and require regular monthly check-ups. Consequently, whenever I receive a transfer, I diligently set aside funds to cover my medical expenses, ensuring I don't miss any vital treatments. These transfers have also proven invaluable in offsetting my transportation costs to the hospital, alleviating an additional financial burden. I'm grateful that the support I receive extends beyond just my healthcare; it also encompasses my nutritional needs. Thanks to these transfers, I'm able to maintain a balanced diet consistently, a luxury I might not have been able to afford on my own. This ensures that I never go without a meal, a situation that could be daunting if I solely rely on my own resources.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am grappling with hypertension and other persistent old-age health issues that demand regular medical attention and check-ups. My ability to work has been compromised, and unfortunately, I lack a reliable source of assistance to offset these medical expenses. My reliance is solely on the transfers, as they provide the means for me to undergo necessary treatments and maintain a nourishing diet. At present, my primary focus revolves around these crucial aspects—ensuring my medical needs are met and sustaining a balanced diet—both made feasible through these transfers.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Frequent illnesses have significantly compromised my health and left me frail. My doctor emphasized the importance of maintaining a nourishing and balanced diet. However, given my limited financial means, adhering to this advice would have been unattainable were it not for the timely transfers. Relying on my sons for support, though well-intentioned, proved insufficient to meet my needs adequately. Fortunately, the transfers have led to a positive transformation in my well-being. I've been able to prioritize my health by availing myself of necessary medical care, particularly for my hypertension, which has had a substantial impact on my overall health. It brings me immense joy to express that I can now manage the costs of my medical treatments without encountering undue hardships, all thanks to these transfers. My health is steadily improving, and I am regaining strength despite the challenges of old age.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I decided to put off the plan since I was going to invest in cattle farming and instead focus on improving my health. I'm currently determined to save money so that I can visit a specialist doctor for prescription advice. After that, I'll start working toward my main objective, raising livestock.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have been ravaged by arthritis for the past three years. My kids had a hard time paying my medical bills at first. I am appreciative of the monthly payment I receive from you since it encouraged me to seek medical attention, relieving some of the financial pressure my kids were facing. I recently received a transfer, therefore I decided to spend $30 to purchase some prescription medications. They responded nicely, which I am delighted about because I think it will speed up my recovery. Due to my children's difficulties with the main meals of the day, I also purchased two kilograms of sugar for my morning tea.

In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I want to express my appreciation to the group for their passionate work on behalf of society's less fortunate people. I use the money from the cash transfer program to take care of my most urgent needs, so it's a great idea. I implore the group to continue the excellent work they have started in aiding the vulnerable members of society.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a large portion of my transfer on food. I don't have the energy to work and support myself because I am very old. My son, a retired teacher, provides financial support for me. Due to a lack of employment, he has had difficulty providing food for the family in recent months. We are now forced to purchase food from the stores at very high prices because the severe effects of the drought have made it impossible to grow and harvest crops on the farm. I chose to buy food in bulk so that my son, who had incisively searched for a job for a full week without finding one, would not have to bear the heavy burden. Along with food purchases, I also made a $10 hospital bill payment. I got sick and was quickly admitted to the hospital. I was able to receive treatment at the hospital thanks in large part to the money from the transfer.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was already in deep sleep due to my illness by the time I got the text message informing me that I had received my first transfer. My son, who was in custody of my phone, told me the following morning that I had received my first transfer. I was so happy that tears of happiness streamed down my cheeks in the shape of an eleven. I was in a great deal of physical pain, but I was at ease in my heart knowing that I would eventually receive medication.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
My health has improved, and this is the biggest change that the transfer of funds has brought about in my life. By ensuring that I purchased the prescription medications I require, the money from the transfer was extremely important in helping me improve my health. My health deteriorated prior to receiving the transfer, which was made worse by the fact that I lacked the funds to pay for medication or visit the hospital.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My first transfer brought me great joy. I was bedridden and seriously ill at that time. I don't work anymore and am totally dependent on my son to take care of me. He is employed by odd jobs that pay him pitiful wages and was unable to take me to the hospital to get my medication. As soon as I got my transfer, I spent $6 on prescription medication to help me. This was my best option because I couldn't afford to pay the hospital's enormous bill. I bought food with the $6 that was left over. I purchased milk, two packets of maize flour, fresh green vegetables, and nutritious fruits. I'm appreciative that my health has dramatically improved and that I'm making good progress. Due to the financial assistance I received from GiveDirectly.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am 90 years old, at this age, there is little that I can do with such money. My desire has always been to get someone who can help my son in taking care of some of my responsibilities. The things that I need mostly are medication and food because I am prone to a lot of diseases and the drugs I use require me to take nutritious food all the time. Receiving these transfers, therefore, means that I will be able to buy drugs and food without having to burden my son with them.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I was bedridden for close to two months, my family was losing hope in me surviving because they did not have enough money to take me to a good hospital. Fortunately, towards the end of Feb my son got some money which he used to take me to the hospital where I got treated and now I feel much better. I was very happy when I saw the joy in my family's eyes after months of seeking help so I can get medication.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My age has brought a lot of illnesses like back and neck pain and osteoarthritis. My son has been struggling to buy me drugs and food so that I feel better but the responsibilities he has are overwhelming him because of lack of source of income. It saddens my heart when his family goes without eating a that I can eat because the drugs that I use require energy. Lack of money to buy drugs and food is therefore the current challenge that I face.
