How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
We do not have any new goals. We plan to finish accomplishing the goals that we had set before receiving the transfers. We have been able to fulfill others but others are still pending. I used KES 34000 from the second transfer in paying for the tuition fees for my son who is in college. He was about to sit for his examinations and he was not going to be allowed to sit for them before clearing the balance that he still owed the school. He is going to complete his studies next year. I will have to struggle to get his school fees. There are self-help groups that my wife and I have joined and we plan to use the money that we will get from the merry-go-round contributions to pay for our son's tuition fees. The money that we will receive from the group will not be enough, so we also plan to borrow a loan from the group and use it in paying for the remaining amount that we will still be owing the college.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly has done very well because they have changed the lives of the people in the community. The people have been able to make so many developments with the transfer that they got from GiveDirectly. They have been able to build houses, buy livestock, pay school fees for their children, and many more. We are therefore so much grateful and we urge them to continue with the same spirit.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of the money that I got on the second transfer on paying the tuition fee for my son who is in college. Paying for his tuition fees has been our greatest challenge because we do not have a stable source of income. We are small-scale farmers and we depend on the income that we get from the sale of farm products such as vegetables and onions that we grow. This hasn't been easy because we at times experience challenges such as when there is too much supply of the farm product in the market, the demand goes down and hence we end up selling goods at a throwaway price. We can get as low as KES 500 but when the demand is good, we get as high as KES 5000 from the sales. The money that we get from the sales together with that that we get from the self-help groups that we have joined is what we use in paying for our son's tuition fee who is in college.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was an exciting moment receiving my first transfer. I was home with my wife when I received a notification message on my phone and on checking it, we were so happy that we could not control our joy but had to thank God for answering our prayers after a long spell of financial challenges. For the better part of that day, excitement overrun our daily schedule as we took most of the time confirming the plans we had in place as we make some adjustments to the budget based on the immediate costs of all that we needed.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life after receiving the first transfer is the availability of clean water after several days of heavy rains. I had been able to collect a lot as I directed all the rainwater from the roofs to the tank strategically placed at my doorstep. I am glad that the money I had been paying to be supplied with some liters of water can now be spent to serve other household needs.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After receiving the first transfer, I spent KES19000 on obtaining a water tank to help reduce the frequent visits I had been making to and from the river. This had been useful in the collection of rainwater from the roof both for our home use and also for the livestock. I also spent KES20000 on obtaining a heifer to add to the other lactating cow I had been having. I am hoping to soon increase milk production that has been of great help in sorting most household bills whenever sold. With the remaining KES 15000, I paid school fees for my lastborn son who is currently in college. Together with the two of us, we are currently a family of three, and we are working hard to ensure that he gets enough resources to complete his college studies.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
We rely on subsistence farming in order to meet our needs. I would love to add a cow to my herd in order to boost milk production for sale. I will use 300 dollars to purchase it. I will buy a water tank for 20 dollars since we get water from far and my wife is not able to fetch water because of her age. I will use 150 dollars to pay college fee for my younger son.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of the day is in the afternoon because I get to rest after coming from the farm and have had something to eat.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Old age comes with a lot of things. We cannot produce a lot from our farm because the labor is low. This has affected our income and the amount of food used to feed us. Finding manual labor is a hard task because we do not have money to pay for it.
