Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 9.20am that blissful morning while trying to borrow some money from a neighbor for my painting job. When the neighbor happily asked me if I had received the transfers and immediately my Mpesa notification came and couldn't be happier. I hastily went back to my house and informed my wife of the good news and we decided to go and buy the items as we had planned. That day we celebrated an early Christmas and my wife is excited to date.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is happiness because I now own two dairy cows and it motivates me to care for them with utmost attention. Nowadays, I and my family sleep comfortably because we bought new beddings using the GiveDirectly transfers. We also have access to adequate food and clothing unlike before when we used to eat from hand to mouth. As a result, my kids have grown healthier and happier than before.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of my transfer on settlement of a dairy cow debt. I have also managed to secure a boarding secondary school and clear school fees for my daughter who's currently in a day high school. She will be attending the boarding school from next term in order to give full concentration to her studies given that it will be her last class. Initially, I used to rely on my painting job to pay school fees and feed my family which was quite unreliable.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means quality education for my school-going children. I have 2 school-going children; one in primary level and one in secondary level who are in a local school within the village. My wife and I earn meager income from our work. My wife works in a quarry earning an approximate wage of KES 100 a day and I am a painter within and outside the village earning approximately KES 200 a day. Both jobs are seasonal and therefore our incomes are unsustainable. We have been unable to save enough cash and take our children to better schools. Our ambition has been to take them to the best schools with quality education and improve their future lives. We intend to spend KES 40,000 of our first transfer to take the one who is in secondary level to a better school. Fulfilling the dream of our children will bring joy of our lives.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Living a debt-free life has brought joy and happiness in our lives for the last 6 months. We were able to clear the debts from my late mother's medical bills and funeral expenses shortly after her burial. Initially, we were in a dilemma on how we will clear the debts but with the help of well-wishers, our financial burden was solved.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
We are currently facing financial inadequacy in our household. My mother became sick for almost three years and we spent all our savings at her disposal. We took her to various hospitals with the hope of getting better medication but unfortunately, she passed on last year. This left us with huge hospital bills of KES 84,000 and we had to seek assistance from well-wishers and the fundraising drive. From there, we have been unstable financially.
