How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I intend to keep growing my business more to make it a wholesale.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did a great job in our village and even in other villages that it has been before ours. I am glad that they were open to everyone in explanation of the program details and knowledge conveyance right from the Baraza, in-house visits, registration calls, and even follow-up calls after the transfers. I was also impressed by the encouragement on the wise spending as this was taken seriously as evidenced by the outcome. We were enrolled without bias giving residents a chance to drastically improve their living standards.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
There had been a fire outbreak at my place of work which took away my business. I was stressed and worried of how to revive it. When I got my second transfer, I knew that was my first priority to do and so I rented another premises and set up my business afresh using all the transfer.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I can still remember vividly it was exactly 6 PM when I was preparing an evening meal for my family when my mobile phone started ringing so loudly. I was a bit nervous and I even had to stop the task I was up to and check the incoming messages. Upon reading the texts, I realized that they were from Segovia Technology informing me that I had finally received my transfers. I was overwhelmed with joy and decided to share the news with the rest of my family members who were also around. We started dancing and celebrating this precious gift in our life knowing that it will erase all the difficulties we have been through.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I now have peace of mind. This is because of the pressure that I have experienced from my landlord concerning the fire incident that had occurred earlier on. I did not have any freedom or happiness since he has always been asking when I will be cleaning the costs. It was such a stressful moment in my life because I did not know how and where I would get the money needed to cover all this. The little I could earn from my daily hustle could only cater for the family's daily bread and nothing more. However, I was always optimistic that someday this shall come to an end. God heard my cry and today the story is different, I was able to settle debts and I no longer have to worry about all the harassment again and as a woman, this has restored my dignity.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a huge portion of my first transfer on settling a debt. I, therefore, bought some building materials which include iron sheets, building poles, nails, timber, and catered for the labor costs. This was purposely for the compensation of the damages that were caused by the fire incident on the building that I had rented. I am so happy that for now I no longer have the burden like before. With the remaining amount of money, I bought foodstuffs like maize flour, cereals, vegetables, and cater for some other household items that I was lacking.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means being debt free. My shop business burnt down to the ground last month, sinking me into a lot of debt because I had taken most of my stock on credit. The debt currently stands at KES 300,000. I intend to spend all my transfer cash to settle part of it so I can have peace of mind. This will make me feel a bit relieved.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Despite all the challenges that I have been going through in the last month. What brought joy to me is that my spouse own a motorcycle which he is now using it on transporting charcoal and earns income from it.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Last month I lost my only source of income to a fire that razed down everything. I owned a retail shop that was well stocked . Life has not been the same again. I have been forced to transfer my children to another school since I cannot afford the previous one. The three meals a day that I used to enjoy with my children is now a thing of the past. I am now back to the drawing board because I do not have enough money in my savings to start a new business. I do not know where to begin.
