How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Having my own house has made m life to be very different and I can proudly mention. My previous house was just a small hut with some old roofing which was so leaky. During the winter seasons, I was always seeking shelter from friends who had the mercy to host me. But then I was not comfortable because their houses were also small. There are times I decided to stay in my hut even when it rains and I was always attacked with pneumonia because of the cold nights. This problem is now sorted out because I am now sleeping comfortably under a semi-permanent house which is iron roofed. I am now happy together with my family, I don't have to worry about the rain anymore. Courtesy to GiveDirectly.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did us so well in so many ways. I was given the freedom to chose what I want to do. I had to choose what to buy according to what I have been longing. Also, the enrollment was done fairly without considering one's tribe or religion. Third, it was difficult for one to steal my money because the money was sent directly to my phone. This was also a noble idea and their were rare cases of theft in the village. I do not see any sector GiveDirectly failed us all was done so fair and well.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying an ox at KES 13700. I settled in buying it because of my farming activities. Previously I was using my own hands with a bit tiresome considering the fact that I am old. Because of that, I was getting very low harvests. I could not utilize the whole piece of the farm, it was not easy for me. I then bought a bed at KES 5500 and a mattress at KES 5000. I had been sleeping on the traditional beds ever since I got married. I never thought I would sleep comfortably on a bed with a mattress. It was like a dream to me. I then bought a wooden door at KES 1500. This was for the house that I had constructed with the first transfer. I then paid school fees for my grandson who is in high school at KES 4550. The remaining amount of money I bought enough foodstuffs.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
Having my own semi-permanent house has made my life to be different which is something that I can proudly mention. The house that was initially my shelter was in a poor state. Its roof had worn out and leaking whenever it rained. I have never enjoyed the peace of living in a decent house and could only admire those of my friends and neighbors. Whenever it could rain, I always had to seek shelter from them and this was so stressful. I am glad that the story changed recently. Having a new decent semi-permanent and an iron-roofed house has brought enjoy in my life like the rest. I no longer have to worry about the rains. I am grateful for the financial support that I got from GiveDirectly.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 8 am when I saw a notification on my mobile phone. Upon checking, I realized it was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly. It was a sigh of relief knowing that I had finally received the transfer that I had been promised. I felt so happy because I knew the money would change my life completely.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying some building materials such as iron sheets, nails, timber, and building poles. This was purposely for the construction of a new house. The previous one was almost collapsing due to the heavy rain. I later bought a new bed and a mattress. I am glad that nowadays I sleep comfortably. Before then, I had a traditional bed made of ropes that were weak and uncomfortable. Lastly, I managed to pay school fees for my children who are still in primary school and took care of my family's basic needs.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
A reasonable house is generally what receiving this money means to me. As a trend in our village, people have recently been transiting from old, grass-thatched branded houses to semi-permanent or even permanent iron-roofed houses. I have always wished to build one but owing to the fact that I am a widow with no reliable source of income, this dream has never come through. With the arrival of GiveDirectly, I am confident that I will be able to construct a decent house once I receive my transfers. This will place me in the same living standard as that of my neighbors, something that will give me peace of mind and hence a honored life.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Generally, I consider morning being the happiest part of my day. This is because waking up healthy and energized give me the courage to take up my day's work that can earn me a dollar for my family's food. Afternoon hours are tiresome since I am always on the look for my customers while evening meet me when fully exhausted.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial constraints have been the biggest hardship in my life. This is because, at the age of 79 years, I am still having the responsibility of taking care of my grandchild whose father is a deceased while the mother was remarried. Imagine burning charcoal and taking them to the nearest town looking for potential buyers and fail to get one! Basic needs provision like beddings, food, nice shelter, and school fees has been always a challenge. To some extent, I have wished to get support from my son but this is a mere dream since he is just a village boy.
