How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Farming has been the main source of income for my family. After receiving all my transfers, I did some improvements that brought a lot of impact on our daily life. At the moment, I am looking forward to improving it further in the future by buying a piece of land to give more space for subsistence and livestock farming. Improving our farming productivity will definitely change a lot in our family through the proceeds we will be getting.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
A lot has changed not only in my family but also in other households in the village after receiving support from GiveDirectly. We have improved our farming practices and productivity. Others constructed new houses while other people paid school fees for their children in full. I attribute all these changes to the monetary support received and the freedom to make our decisions on spending. They should improve the enrollment approach that left some people whom we felt were supposed to enroll in the program, but the information collected by the officers from the neighborhood denied them the opportunity. It would have been well if the officers would have worked with the village elders and the chiefs since they have clear records of the legitimate members of the village.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After receiving the first transfer, I spent KES 40000 on buying a dairy cow that is currently providing my family with enough milk. I also used part of the remaining amount to plant more grass, which cut the cost of buying feeds for the two cows. Milk production has increased at the moment and thus the daily income from the sales. I saved the remaining amount and have been useful in buying feeds and supplements for the livestock and also household food. At the moment, I am a teacher in a private primary school and a distance learning student in a college as well. Payment of my school fees has solely been with the salary I am earning and sometimes supporting my family of three with the remaining amount.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
That morning, I woke up at 6am and on switching on my phone which was off overnight I received an SMS notification confirming that I had KES55000 from GiveDirectly.I was very excited because it came earlier than expected.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving this transfers is availability of a daily income. This is because the dairy cow I bought produces10 liters which I sell on a daily basis at KES40 per liter and can amount to 100 dollars or more in a month.I also have adequate food for my family from sale of milk. GiveDirectly transfers have also helped me to concentrate on dairy farming which requires less attention and gives alot of income.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES43000 on a dairy cow and two heifers because I had learned the benefits of dairy farming from my father who's been a long-term dairy farmer. The cows will not only be a source of milk but livelihood for my family for a longer time. I spent KES 6000 on furnishing my living room with two sofa set seaters because initially I had local made arm chairs and the rest I have saved for emergencies.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means improved food security. I love farming and I have started tilling my land as I expect to get money to buy certified seeds. In my village, we buy vegetables from the market and I would like to take that opportunity to be the supplier. I intend to do small-scale farming using the irrigation method since our area is prone to drought. I need capital of around KES 30000. This will help me get a continuous flow of income as I have a ready market.
What is the happiest part of your day?
On July 26 of 2021, I was employed as a teacher under Parent Teacher Association. With the money I earn from it, I have managed to sustain family needs like food and clothing. This has brought joy and happiness into my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest challenge is persistent drought. Food crops wither due to insufficient rainfall. We used to depend on maize farming but it has since been affected by pests and diseases which has led us to resort to vendors. Getting money to purchase food is also a challenge my earning as a teacher is insufficient to meet all my household needs including food
