Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
Being a shopkeeper, I was in my house preparing my doughnuts for sale in the shop when I received a message notification on my phone. I could not believe my eyes when I saw a message indicating that I had received KES 55000 in my account. I called my neighbor to confirm the message. I was overwhelmed with joy and thanked GiveDirectly for fulfilling their promise of sending us the transfer.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I am a happy person after improving my business with the help of my transfer. I could not imagine getting such a huge amount of money to improve my business in such a short time. I am grateful to GiveDirectly for the aid. In addition, my children are focusing on their education without any interruption. I am positive that their performance will improve.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 3000 to support my 3 children's education need by paying their school fees. The transfer come at the right time when my kids had been sent home due to fee problems. I also used KES 2500 to purchase building stones for the construction of a decent which I had started a long time but stopped due to lack of finances. The remaining amount assisted in expanding my shop business which I had been operating that supports my family. This is because it was unreliable due to less capital. Currently, my business is running well and there is a significant improvement in my income from my business.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this transfer means building a good house for my family of 6 members. We have been staying in a house which is almost collapsing and leaks during rainy seasons, due to financial instability, I have failed to construct a better one. I am planning to spend 40,000 shillings on the construction of a 2 rooms house so that we can have enough space which can accommodate all of us and leave happily. The remaining transfer will go to my existing business (shop) which is the only source of income I have and make at least a profit of 500 shillings compared to now where I Make 100 shillings as profits.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Morning is my happiest part of the day. It is at this time when I have time to prepare food for my children and leave for my business. Unlike in the evening when I am tired forcing my elder daughter to prepare for her siblings.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of a reliable source of income is my biggest hardship. I depend on my kiosk which gives me a profit of 150 shillings in a day. This amount is not enough to sustain all our needs such as shelter. The proceeds always goes for food only.
