How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I spent $450 on paying school fees for my children in various schools and colleges, I have two children in secondary school and two in the university. I am so happy because they were able to study well without being sent home like before. This was affecting their performance in school. Paying school fees gave me a piece of mind since I had time to do my daily activities without being stressed up like before. The remaining amount of money I spent on food, clothes and other basic household items that we were lacking at that time. I am so grateful because GiveDirectly made our work much easier than before.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The enrolment was perfectly done without any discrimination. The training was as well conducted well and we really benefited from it. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly never did well.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The transfer from GiveDirectly came at a very crucial time in my life when I was struggling to raise school fees for my children. I can vividly recall that the moment I received my transfer, I was at home taking breakfast with my family. It was around 7 am when suddenly I heard my phone ringing, Upon checking I realised that I had received a sum of KES 55,000 from GiveDirectly. I was excited, happy and relieved at the same time because I knew that I would be able to attend to the school fees needs of my children. I am forever grateful for the support that changed and lifted my life amazingly.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life today is that I am happy and contented as a parent. This is because my children are all happy and settled in school because I was able to clear their school fees with the funds that I received from GiveDirectly. Secondly, I was able to pay back a debt that had accumulated for a long time. I am so grateful for the support that lifted our lives amazingly to greater heights.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
School fees have been a major struggle that my husband and I have been struggling with. This is because we are blessed with nine children who are all schooling. I work as a local businesswoman and a consistent farmer. Upon the receipt of my initial transfer, I opted to divide the cash for school fees needs among my children where I used KES 25,000. I then used KES 15,000 in paying back the debt that I had borrowed to settle the school fees arrears way back. Lastly, I used the remaining amount on buying clothes for my children. I am happy and relieved that my children can comfortably study without any hiccups.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means good business for me. Currently, I run a grocery but usually based on selling bananas in a nearby market. I have done this for almost one year now. Since my capital is not enough I have been buying a few bunches of bananas hence getting a profit that is as low as KES.400 in a day. We end up consuming this in buying food and safe at least KES.200 in a day. I have always wanted to expand this business to enable our son who is now in University pursue his education comfortably. Today I am grateful for these transfers from Givedirectly as they will enable my plan to come to reality. I, therefore, intend to build a structure for KES.30000 and use the remaining in buying other items of grocery like cereals. This will eventually increase my profit margin in the business.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My son was almost dropping out of school last year. He had missed his examination because of the accrued fees balance of KES 83000. Since he had applied for the HELB loan we were still optimistic that he will get and continue with his studies. Four months ago he was lucky that the help loan approved his request and he was given KES.70,000. This restored our happiness as a family as the school allowed him to do his exams and continue with his studies.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Currently, the main challenge is the lack of school fees for my son. I have a son who is at the university level and he is pursuing education. Being the only one who managed to pass school, I have always built my hope in him. From KES 400 that I earn in a day, it has not been enough for us to pay for his school fees. The expansion of the business, that I currently do will increase the profit margin and allow me to pay for the school fees balance of KES.35000.
