How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The fact my children have never been sent home for fees arrears since I started receiving the transfers is a very big step in my life. Before the transfers, my children would be sent home on a monthly basis because I was not able to raise money in time to pay school fees for my children. When they were sent home, they would stay at home for even three weeks as I was still looking for the money to pay which is not the case now. Now that I pay their fees in advance, their performance has really improved which makes me happy as a parent.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
Currently, I plan to use my transfers on saving for paying school fees for my children. My desire is that my children should always be in school studying and not wasting time at home because of school fees arrears. I want to give them the best by playing my part in paying the fees arrears.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my transfer on savings in our group as it has been the case ever since I started receiving the transfers from GD. The savings have always been very helpful in mostly paying school fees for my children when beginning a new academic year with new requirements. The rest of the transfer, I used on buying food for my family as I have always done. I always prefer buying food once a month which is cost-effective and less expensive.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I did not have any source of income before I started receiving transfers from Give Directly and solely depended on my husband for all our financial needs. A few months into the program, I managed to start a grocery business that offered me financial independence and an opportunity to support my husband with our household's financial obligations.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
I am planning to go back to school to take a course in orthopaedic so that I can eventually get a better job. This is something I have always wanted to do but could not due to low income. With the help of these transfers together with the support of my husband, I know I will be able to raise the required fee for the course. I have been struggling with casual jobs and small scale businesses which usually collapse after only a few months, so I would like to have a better job with better pay that can enable to be of financial assistance to my family.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of the money I received most recently on personal items for my children such as clothes and shoes. It was during the Christmas holidays and I needed to buy my children a few gifts which is why I spent the money on the items. I spent the rest of the money on foodstuff and other household needs.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is currently different from how it was in that, I can have three meals in a day, I can buy household items and started working on some goals like recently I was able to buy a cow which I did not have before I used to depend on my husband for every thing who is also a casual labourer. My life is currently different from how it was in that, I can now have three meals in a day. Previously, I used to take only one or two meals because I couldn't afford to buy a well-balanced diet for every meal in a day. Since GiveDirectly came into my life, things have changed. At least I can even manage to buy household items and started working on some goals that I thought I couldn't achieve any time soon. Like recently I was able to buy a cow which I did not have initially. Before I used to depend on my husband for every thing which would at times lead to conflicts
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
My new goal is to join college. I wanted to go to college but lack of money seems to cut my dream short. I know that in order to get a formal job in this era, one needs to upgrade their education by specializing in a certain field. I know things are difficult but I am determined to achieve this goal.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I topped up some amount to the recent transfer and kept it as savings in a merry go round. Most members in this merry go round are GiveDirectly's beneficiaries. When I got mine, I bought a dairy. I thank this group for helping me save because I couldn't be disciplined enough to religiously save my monthly transfers. I am hoping that they will multiply because I plan to sell some later when they would have grown and increased in number. My capital to start a business will come from the offsprings of my cow.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Several months before I was enrolled into this program, I had lost the job I had and was forced to hustle and take on all kinds of casual jobs that I could come across, but still, I was unable to make enough money for my daily needs. During this period, I took a lot of loans and credits from my friends and savings group which I could not repay. This forced me to live like a fugitive within my area because I was trying to avoid anyone I owed money just so they would not remind me to pay them. When I started receiving the money from GD,I used the first few transfers to clear off all the debts I had and I am now back to living a normal life. If had never received these transfers, I would still be living as a fugitive or would even relocate eventually to avoid drama.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
I completed high school nine years ago but was unable to go to college due to lack of funds and never thought that it would ever be a reality. With these transfers from GD, I can finally join a Medical College and pursue my long term dream of becoming a nurse. I have been saving most of the monthly transfers I have received so far because I plan to use them later to pay my college fees. I have already sent my application to a nearby college and I hope that I will soon get positive feedback.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I paid most of the money I recently received to our table banking group as we had agreed to be doing every month after realizing that we will be receiving our transfers monthly and not in lump sum as we had hoped. Because I have not had a stable job for some time now, I decided to start a small grocery business with the little money I had left and so far, it is really doing well.

Do you have any new goals that you didn't have before receiving the transfer?
I started savings through a table banking group that we formed. As soon as the savings mature I will get KES 40,000. This capital is enough to start a shop dealing in household good. From the income I get from this business I will ease my husbands' burden as far as meeting my husband's needs is concerned. I will also take my son to a good school since I expect great proceeds that will cater to the same.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Saving money for me Is a great deal for since I have never done this before. I have been jobless for the whole of my life and I have never had a regular source of income. I usually depend on my husband for most of my needs. He does construction jobs which pay little and there is no extra money around the house. I am happy since with the savings I will be able to have the capital to start a shop and get self-employed. We are a group of 12 members and as soon as savings mature I am going to get a total of KES 42000 which is enough to start a business.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 4000 of the most recent transfer on the table banking group that we formed after receiving the transfers. We are a group of 12. The remaining KES 1000 went towards medication for my son.
Describe the moment when you started receiving transfers. How did you feel?
I was very excited when I received the transfers. It happened at a time when I least expected. I am not sure what time of the night when the transfers trickled in I only woke up to a message notifying me that I had received the transfers. I was so excited that I woke my husband who was still asleep to share the good news. Happiness rented the air for the better part of the day.
