How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
No, I don't have any new goal now as I want to focus on making sure that I get some good harvest from onions and tomatoes that I planted courtesy of the transfers.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
What GiveDirectly does well is empowering the less fortunate people in the society by giving them unconditional cash transfers and leaving them at liberty of choosing how to spend it. This has really changed lives of many and we don't take it for granted. May God continue adding you more and more so that you can help as many people as you can.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a small scale farmer and that is what I have been doing for the longest time to provide for my family. Previously, I used man power on a fairly small piece of land because I couldn't afford to hire a tractor. When I was enrolled into the program, I saw this as a good opportunity to advance my farming business. I spend part of my first transfer to hire a tractor to dig a new piece of land where I planted some vegetables. Since I didn't manage to achieve the targeted area, I spend KES 12000 of the recent transfer to dig another piece of land where I planted onions and tomatoes. I am looking forward to earn an estimated profit of KES 90000 compered to the profit of KES 10000 that I earned previously. I also spend KES 28000 to buy a dairy cow which unfortunately died and the balance to paint my house.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 6.30pm while herding cows and cutting firewood as well when I heard my phone ring. On checking, it was KES55000 from GiveDirectly. I was very excited and left for home and later informed my husband of the good news.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving the transfers is purchase of a heifer which will be an income source for my family. Through the transfers, I have also adequate utensils in my house. I normally rely on maize, indigenous vegetables, and tomatoes farming in order to feed my family.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES28800 on a heifer because it will grow and multiply as an addition to dairy cow I had. I spent KES2100 on sofa set cushions, KES 3000 on a sack of maize, KES3600 on my kids clothing, and KES 4000 on 10 chicken layers and a cock. I also spent KES12000 on a generator for water irrigation and KES 2000 on household utensils and the rest on savings.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money comes with a bundle of joy to my family. After we got married 4 years ago now, we have never had an income and we entirely depend from parents to provide us with basic needs. I still want to clear my course which I had deferred because of financial constraints. I intend to use this transfers to go back to school. I have a balance of KES.60,000 to pay for school fees. The remaining amount will help me to equip my house with seats. Will also buy food that will take care of my family for some time.
What is the happiest part of your day?
It is now three months ago since I was blessed with a baby boy. In a community that I come from, when you give birth to a baby boy it becomes joyful to the family. We are now happy in the family and we look forward to taking care of the newborn.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The main challenge that we currently face is lack of an income.Having a family and with no income in the house has been a challenge to us. We had to difer from school and start doing other casual jobs in order to survive. We are so greatful for Give directly transfers since we shall use to progress with our studies.
