How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Farming is our main source of income as a family thus my husband and I usually struggle hard in farming to achieve better returns in each and every undertaking. We had wished to practice livestock keeping to boost our farm outputs but the little income we had never made this possible. The biggest difference in my daily life since I received my transfer is the added asset in form of livestock courtesy of GiveDirectly. I feel so happy to see them knowing that I soon will cut off my daily household expenditure since will have milk from our own. The calves to come will always act as our financial security and help in meeting my children's school fees and other family necessities.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly has positively impacted our miserable lives. I am so thankful for the support. I love how it carries its operation since they are very transparent, so inclusive in the community and more so the uniqueness of giving us a chance to spent the transfer on our own choices.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I had completed constructing a new house using my first transfer but I wasn't able to equip it after running short of money. I took KES5000 of my second transfer to buy chairs, KES800 on curtains and KES6000 to buy cupboard assets that have brought comfort and confidence in my house. I spent another KES6050 on my family clothing and bedding to add top the few we had. I spent KES600 to settle the PTA fee for my primary school children. Being a housewife who heavily depended on my husband for household daily basic needs, I kept a larger amount of my second transfer that I used on daily household needs. I felt happy to have relieved my husband the burden for a while.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
I had desired to build a decent house for my family for so long but I had not been able to fulfill this due to inadequate funds. The money my spouse usually gets from doing some odd jobs was not always enough to feed my family and save some to use in building a house. It is through GiveDirectlys support that I was able to meet this. I am now glad since my newly built house is almost coming into completion. Being able to build a decent house for my family even though it is mudded is the biggest difference in my daily life.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was early in the morning after waking up when I decided to go through my phone. It came as a surprise to me when I realized that GiveDirectly had finally sent us the promised money. I became so happy and I immediately called my spouse and informed him of the good news. He was also overjoyed upon hearing of the good news and asked me if I had indeed verified if it was true.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
When I received my first transfer, I spent some amount to buy some building materials to use in building a spacious house for my family. The building materials I bought majorly included timber, poles, nails and also paid a mason the full cost of this work. The house we are currently living in is small and I did not want a case where my children would have to seek shelter from our neighbors in the future. Its roof always leaks during the rainy season also and it always forced us to squeeze ourselves in one corner. Also, I bought some decent clothes for my family and foodstuffs. I used the remaining amount to buy a dairy cow. I settled on this so that when it reproduces, I will be able to save the money I would otherwise use in buying milk.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money will enable me build a new two roomed house since the roof of the one we live in leaks whenever it rains. Buying a dairy calf and two goats is also part of my plans since this will act as savings in that i when my children reach secondary school, i will sell the goats which by then will have multiplied, hence i will be able to pay school fees with ease
What is the happiest part of your day?
Evening is the happiest part of my day since its the time my spouse arrives home to reunite and bond with our children and i after a long day being apart.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My spouse who is the breadwinner of our family is a livestock herder in someone's farm and the income he earns is barely enough to sustain all the needs of our family. I always wish to support him in providing for the family by starting up poultry farming or groceries business, but i haven't been able to do so due to lack of capital. Financial instability is therefore the challenge we face in our family
