How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Before receiving the transfer, buying milk was my routine. Also, getting money to spend on food stuffs was not an easy task as I do not have any stable source of income. I am glad that this is no longer the case. My family now have enough food and I no longer buy milk daily like before. The transfers enabled me to purchase enough food and a dairy cow. This has made my life change from how it was before and how it would have been had I not received the transfer.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well by giving out financial aid and I do not see anything that they do not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received my transfer, I spent KES 34,000 to purchase a dairy cow. I settled on this so that it would relieve me the cost of buying milk on a daily basis. Also, I spent KES 10,000 to buy some food stuffs and other household necessities. I still have some amount that I am planning to be using on food and in case of an emergency.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at the hospital taking care of a child that had fallen ill during the previous night. I was in a hurry to get to the hospital and I had forgotten to take my phone with me to the hospital. The good news SMS had hence come in when the phone was at home and my son was the first person to see it. I guess he became so happy about seeing this because he came to the hospital to give me the phone with so much happiness on his face. He told me the good news and I could not believe it because I had never received such a large sum of money before. I had to check the message on my own to believe it. I became so happy and I gave thanks to God and GiveDirectly for what they had done to me.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer has brought a big difference in my life and that of my family. I have been able to buy a cow which I am currently waiting for it to reproduce. When it reproduces, we will be able to get milk for our consumption and we can sell some and use the money on other important things. I will no longer have to incur the cost of buying milk almost every day. I have also been able to pay my son’s tuition fee and I no longer have the stress of thinking of where I am going to get the money to do so. Thank you so much GiveDirectly for helping me.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The transfer from GiveDirectly helped me a lot. I was able to buy a cow that I had for a long time desired to have. I was also able to pay for my son’s tuition fee who is currently studying at the University. I still have a little bit of money left with me that has been helping me in buying a few household items such as sugar, milk, soap, etc. The reason why I bought a cow is because I have been buying milk for a while now and hence we have been lacking enough milk for our consumption. The cost too of buying milk is high considering the fact that I do not have a stable source of income. I usually depend on farming as my source of income. I grow a few crops such as vegetables, onions that I usually supply to a school. The school in turn gives me money that I mostly use in paying for my son’s education. I have hence not have enough money that can enable me to make other developments.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am a widower and paying the school fees for my last two kids has been an uphill task. One of them is a third year University student while the other is in primary level. Receiving this money means that I will be able to pay for their school fees arrears and cushion myself for the next year. I will then use the remaining amount from my transfer to buy a small heifer so that I can sell it in two years time and pay for the school fees of my last born kid.
What is the happiest part of your day?
After I am done with the usual household chores in the morning, I prepare porridge to sell to my customers in a nearby market center. My happiest part of the day is in the evening when I account for the profits of the day. The higher the profit, the better the day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am a widower and fending for my family on my own. With no regular source of income, paying for my kid's school fees has been the biggest hardship I have ever faced. I rely on subsistence farming as a source of livelihood and the little I get from this, is hardly enough to fend for my family. The surplus are the ones I sell to pay for the school fees. Usually I fall short every year in clearing the arrears and this prompted me to join microfinance where I get loans to offset the balances. Repayment of the loan then becomes so hard that I keep on defaulting now and then.
