How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am happy that the results of the wise spending of both the first and the second transfer are amazing. My household currently has a reliable source of income after purchasing a second-hand motorcycle that my spouse operates for taxi services. I now have a new goal to go back to school so that I can complete my high school studies. I dropped out in form two after my parents hit a hard rock in raising my school fees which later sent me to marriage. Life is tough, especially without proper education. I have tried to secure jobs but all in vain. I believe that the only way to succeed in life is having proper education hence my quench to g back to school.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
It is amazing how the whole village that was full of hopeless people has completely changed. The village is filled with lively and dedicated people. There are no more household conflicts. Every homestead currently have either live stocks, improved houses, healthy members, or at least some sources of income. Give directly did a great job by enrolling every village member without any bias and giving us the same amount of money. I have no complaints at all but am thankful to Give Directly for coming to our rescue.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent the whole of my second transfer on a second-hand motorcycle that my spouse is currently operating for taxi services. He previously relied on offering layman services at construction sites but it was not reliable since the activities are seasonal. This led us to numerous debts and at times we would lack most basic needs like food. With the motorcycle, our household living standards have improved. We are even able to save some money at the end of the day after meeting our expenses.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
While resting from fetching some water at around 4pm, I received a message in my phone. Upon checking, it was the promised transfer from GiveDirectly. My heart was filled with gratitude and thanksgiving for the act of being sent a huge amount of money something that I haven’t seeing in my life.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The main difference that I felt after the first transfer from GiveDirectly is the peace of mind and also an environmental peace that engulfed our marriage. Initially my husband was being harassed because of the dowry and this issue was not giving us peace at all. I remember the worst thing that was almost to happen was my parents coming for me so that I return to my initial home. Currently those plans are no longer there and we are living peacefully.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After withdrawing the money, my husband and I agreed on paying part of the dowry he was supposed to pay to my parents. Therefore, he took KES 30000.00 to my parents who are his in-laws as part of dowry. Since I received the money in a festive season, I used KES 10000.00 for Christmas and New Year celebration with my family, bought clothes for my children worthy KES 5000.00 and kept KES 4000.00 for my primary children school fees which I paid in the opening day.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means going to vacation college (undertaking a beauty course). When I finished primary school I got a scholarship to secondary school from coca cola because I was good at football. I saw this as a miracle that will enable me to achieve my desire of becoming a nurse. Unfortunately, when I reached form 2 the sponsor decided to reduce the candidates he had sponsored because he did not enough funds and I was among them. This completely discouraged me because my parents could not raise the fees and I had to drop out of school. I am planning to spend 40,000 KES to pay for my course. This will equip me with beautiful knowledge and I believe that I will be able to employ myself and support my family of 4 members. Other than that I will spend the remaining amounts to clear debts.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In June, my husband's wages were delayed and he could not able to send any money to me. This was a difficult time for me. I remember spending the night with my 2 children without food. The following morning I saw a message on my phone that I have received 2000 KES from my husband. This brought joy to my life because I was able to buy food for my children and they were able to go to school and study.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of a stable source of income is the biggest hardship I am currently facing. I am a full-time housewife because my health ( chest problems) can not allow me to do casual jobs. I fully depend on my husband who works in town as casual labor and his wages of 5000 KES in a month are not enough to sustain all our needs such as fees.
