How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Our lives are much better after receiving the transfer. This is because we have some piece of land where we plant vegetables and other crops unlike before. Having some farm produce eases my struggle of getting feeding my family. Currently, we can get something to eat even when I have no income or money. Initially, it was a must for us to spend some funds each time we intend to eat, something that has dramatically changed.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly does well by not discriminating against anyone. Each eligible resident in a selected village gets enrolled and receives equal amounts of money. This makes us all feel equal in different aspects. In my opinion, there is nothing that GiveDirectly does not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent all the second transfer on purchasing a piece of land (0.2 acres). I have always yearned to acquire some additional pieces of arable land since we have been owning 0.2 acres that is just enough to accommodate our homestead, leaving no room for farming. Such a situation had made our lives tougher since we used to buy everything yet we come from a place that is favorable to varied agricultural practices, including crop and livestock farming. Coming from a humble background, yet I have no reliable source of income makes it challenging for me to adequately fend for my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was going about with my motorbike business and I had stopped for a while at a hotel to have lunch. I heard my phone ringing notifying me of an incoming message. I pulled my phone from the pockets to check what the SMS was all about. I could not believe my eyes when I saw the contents of the SMS. I became so happy on seeing this that I could no longer continue having lunch. I called my wife and I informed her of the good news. She was so happy to hear this and she kept saying thank you to God. I also thanked God because He had opened a way for us.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer has brought a big difference in my life and that of my family. It has enabled me to buy the cow that I had for a long time desired to have but due to lack of money, I was not in a position to acquire it. I will hence no longer have to incur the costs of buying milk when the cow reproduces and I can use the money on other important things such as paying for the children’s school fees. My children will also be able to have enough milk for their consumption and they will no longer have to suffer. The food that we bought with the transfer, that is, three bags of maize and a 50-kg bag of rice will enable us to have something to eat for a while. I will hence not be having any worries about where to get money to buy food. The children too are happy because they have something to eat and new clothes for themselves.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The transfer from GiveDirectly has helped me a lot. I bought a cow with part of the transfer. I also bought food for our consumption as a family. I was able to buy three bags of maize and a 50-kg bag of rice. With the remaining amount, I used it in buying some clothes for my children. The reason why I decided to buy a cow is that I have been buying milk for a while. My children have hence not been getting enough milk for their consumption. I had some cows before but I had to sell them because one of my children had fallen ill and I needed money for his treatment. I have not been in a position to buy another cow since then due to financial constraints. I am a builder and at times I get work to do and at times there is none. When there no work to do, I usually do the business of moving people from one place to another with my motorbike. The money that I get from the two activities, has mostly been going to the purchase of everyday food and milk. It has thus been difficult for me to do the above because it was requiring a large sum of money that I did not have.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have been grappling with the idea of starting dairy farming for a while now but financial constraints have been weighing me down. I love this because it is something you can do from the comfort of your home. Milk is also a great source of protein for my young children. It will also relieve me from buying milk every other morning because as we speak, I spend 80 shillings daily to purchase the same. I have plans of acquiring a quality Friesian cow for 50000 shillings to start me off this journey. Out of this investment, I can rest assured knowing that I have 8-10 liters of milk daily. I will then sell the same at our local market at 40 shillings a liter. This will guarantee me daily income hence boost my financial independence.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am always happy in the evening when I am finally home with my family. My children are ever inquisitive and being there to answer their questions is the most fulfilling thing I can ask for.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
In the year 2018, my wife delivered twins and this was the happiest point in my life. Both were boys and they were very healthy at birth. One month later, one child developed complications and I took him to the nearest referral hospital. He was diagnosed with Meningitis, treated and later discharged a week later. After 2 weeks at home, my child was not getting any better and I decided to seek treatment elsewhere. I went to Kijabe hospital where I met the shock of my life. I was told that my son had a tumor in his brain and needs to be operated on as a matter of urgency. This left me devasted with little options at hand. I could not raise the deposit that was required for an operation to start. I had to come back home to look for well-wishers to help me raise more than 300000 shillings but I lost my son in the process.
