How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My utmost desire is to increase maize production and ensure that my children complete their education without any debts. These goals hold great importance to me, and I am determined to work towards achieving them. I will assess my available resources and determine the suitable amount of land for cultivation. Conducting soil testing will help me understand the fertility of the soil and make any necessary adjustments. I will then research and select high-quality maize seed varieties that are well-suited to my climate and soil conditions. By implementing proper agricultural practices such as timely planting, irrigation, weed control, and pest management, I aim to maximize yields. Investing in machinery, such as tractors or irrigation systems, may enhance efficiency. Financial planning is crucial to ensure that my children can complete their education without accumulating debts. I will develop a budget, allocating a portion of my income towards setting aside funds for school fees.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The financial assistance I received without the burden of debt has provided me with a unique opportunity to allocate the funds according to my priorities. This flexibility has brought a sense of relief and empowerment, allowing me to make decisions that align with my long-term goals and aspirations. Moreover, this assistance has opened up avenues for personal and professional development. I have the means to invest in my own growth and unlock my full potential. The fact that this support comes without the burden of debt brings a sense of gratitude and responsibility. I am determined to make the most of this opportunity, utilizing the funds wisely and making choices that align with my long-term goals.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The well-being and comfort of our children were of paramount importance to us. It pained us to see our son, who had now entered Form One, sleeping in the kitchen due to the lack of proper living space. Determined to provide him with a conducive environment for studying and growth, we decided to allocate $350 towards building a house specifically for him. The construction of the house would provide him with the privacy and tranquility he needed to excel academically. In addition to the house, we allocated $200 towards school fees for our six children. Education was a priority for us, and we believed in providing them with the best opportunities for learning and personal growth. By paying their school fees, we ensured that their educational journey would continue without any hindrances or disruptions. We understood the strain that casual work had placed on our finances. However, the GiveDirectly transfers provided us with the means to alleviate that burden. It was a moment of relief and empowerment as we could fulfill our responsibilities as parents and invest in our children's future. The sacrifices we made were worth it, knowing that we were providing them with the foundation for a better life.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
Upon receiving a message confirming the first transfer from GiveDirectly, I felt a great sense of excitement. It was around 3:00 pm when I was at home preparing supper, and I had to pause my activities to ensure that what I saw was true. Although my husband was not present at the time, I celebrated the receipt of the transfer with my sister-in-law, and we shared in the joy together.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Since receiving the first payment from GiveDirectly and constructing a separate house for my son who had previously been sharing a space with my daughters, the biggest difference in your daily life is likely the new space and privacy within my household. This change has likely brought a sense of relief and comfort to both me and your son who also gave a private space for my daughters, as he now has a private space to sleep and study, which will likely improve his academic performance. Additionally, this investment in my son's future has likely given me pride and accomplishment, as I am able to provide him with a comfortable living space and set him up for success.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After receiving the first transfer from GiveDirectly, I was relieved to finally provide a private space for my eldest son, who had previously been sharing a small area with my daughters in our kitchen. As he has grown, he needs a separate space where he can sleep away from his sisters. I allocated $350 towards constructing a new house for him, which is now complete and ready for him to use when he returns from school. Additionally, I used $150 to pay school fees for my daughter, who is currently in her third year of high school. Prior to receiving the transfer, we had relied on livestock and subsistence farming to ensure food security and pay other bills. The remainder of the transfer was used to purchase food for my family of nine.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
Receiving this money means a comfortable life for my family of eleven. We live in a single house that acts as kitchen, living and sleeping area. It is very small to accommodate visitors and also there is a lack of privacy. I desire to own a three-roomed iron sheet house where my daughters and son can have a bedroom of their own and also host visitors. Give directly has come at the right time because I can be able to own a good house eventually and also school my children. I am happy because the transfers will help lift a heavy burden for us. At the same time I will purchase a water storage tank that can be helpful to store rain water which we can use for drinking and home consumption.
What is the happiest part of your day?
When my son passed his primary-level examinations in December, I was very happy since he got a chance to join a prestigious secondary school. I am thankful to God because he will be able to study well and pursue his dream career in teaching. My children's success is what brings me happiness in life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My three daughters are in secondary school and another one is about to join a medical school. Unfortunately, they are all at home for lack of school fees. My husband and I do subsistence farming to make ends meet and for the past two years, we have not had a bumper harvest. This has made it difficult to raise school fees for them which disheartens us.
