How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My new goal is to purchase pieces of land so that I can construct a rental house. I trust that this will be the best long-term investment that will empower me enough to pay school fees for my children who are in primary schools. Also, the rent that I will be collecting monthly will enable me to meet my family's basic needs because for years I have been depending on temporary casual jobs.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does in my region on how they treated us from the very first day the organisation came into our lives. There is a huge transformation now in terms of assets and living standards in general. We can now access decent shelters, our children are also in schools moreover every compound has livestock. I did not see or hear anything that GiveDirectly needs to change so far.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying building materials like bricks, cement, iron sheets, and timber at a total of KES 20000. I had aspired to build a new house because the initial one was a temporary small hut which would collapse anytime due to its poor condition. I was always in fear because we were approaching the winter seasons and I had the feeling that we would be left homeless together with my four children. Therefore after receiving the transfers, I had to think of a permanent solution for the same. I am now excited that I will no longer have to worry about the harsh weather like before. Also, I cleared the hospital bills for my children who have been diagnosed with malaria some days back. I am thankful they have fully recovered and they are now in school courtesy of GiveDirectly. With the remaining amount, I bought food for the five family members and settled other pending bills.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was bathing my children when I heard the loud vibrations from my phone. I ignored it and proceeded with what I was doing. However, a few minutes later, I heard another vibration which caught my attention. I opted to check and I couldn't believe what I saw. It was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly. I had finally received my first KES 55000. I was so excited and I even remember saying a special thanksgiving prayer together with my family members.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Having the goats in my life has brought the biggest difference in my daily life. I opted to have them because they not only mature very fast but are also the most valuable living assets one could ever have. Currently, two have started reproducing and I am positive that I will have many of them within a short period. Once they increase in number I will be in a better position to pay school fees for my children without struggling like before. Also, I will be selling some and fend for my family's basic needs. For years I have been struggling to raise my children since my spouse and I depend on the charcoal business which was not lucrative. Most of the time, my kids would lack food and other needs. I am now a happy mother and even enjoying my marriage before I am no longer stressed financially.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 17500 of my first cash transfer to buy five goats. For so many years, I have been yearning to have them for long but I could not afford to own even one. I settled for them because they require minimal supervision and mature very fast. To add to that I bought three mattresses worthy of KES 12300. I am now thankful that we are sleeping in a decent place unlike before whereby we used to experience lots of challenges like back pains. Also, I bought ten bags of cement at KES 5500 and sand at KES 3000. This was purposely for the renovation of my house since its walls were very weak. Additionally, I cleared school fees of KES 3800 for my three children in primary school. With the remaining amount of money, I bought foodstuffs for my five family members and settled all the pending bills.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have three children with my husband, all attending grade school at the moment paying around 800 KES each per academic term. I'm a second wife and so for that reason I do not expect much from my husband as he has to balance between the two households. It would be my greatest pride and joy if I could get a slightly bigger house than the two roomed I have rightnow. This way I will be able regain my privacy by not having to sleep with any child in my bedroom. When I get this money, I would love to build another house even if I have to top up the money and also acquire some cattle to keep so that I can resell whenever there's an emergency.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My husband trades on livestock by buying and reselling for a profit. I really enjoyed in the month of December last year when it was a boom season and he was able to get a lot of sales. This boosted his income over the festive season and we got most of our needs as a family during that time. That's even the time I managed to repair my leaking roof.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I do not have enough space in my house to accommodate us with the three children comfortably. I only have a two roomed house with a corridor and so my children have been sleeping with their grandmother with the last born still sharing a bed with us at nine years. This robs me off my privacy completely and I'm always trying my best to raise money so that I can build a bigger house. It could have been easy if my husband didn't have responsibilities in the other house.
