How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Before the transfers, I used to struggle to pay my house rent. In most cases, I would be locked out of the house and had to beg my landlord to allow me into the house. We did not have a good relationship with my landlord because I was always defaulting paying rent. Ever since I started getting my transfers and used it to clear my previous deficits, I have had a good relationship with the landlord than even if I pay late with a few days, he does not lock me out of the house because he knows I will have the money to pay.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
Currently, the only goal I have is to continue investing more in the business by boosting it. I plan to add more hair products and buy new equipment so that I may be able to meet the standard set in the market. This is why I want to dedicate my transfers on the business.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used my last transfer in starting up a salon business. This has been my dream but since I did not have where to get the capital, I was not able to start it. Now that I got capital from GD, I have the business. The rest of the transfer I have saved to help me in future use and mostly on the business in case it does not pick well immediately. I know I will still have to input more in the business hence I have decided to save the money and help me when I will have an emergency.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is currently different from how it would have been had I never received the transfer since I now own business unlike before. Before GiveDirectly came for enrolment, I used to depend on any available work at the construction sites. This work was always tedious and the pay was very low which would not enable me to meet all my daily needs and to pay my bills on time. I am glad since all this is in the past now because my daily income has increased. This has enabled me to meet all my needs, pay my bills on time and also help my siblings by paying part of their school fees. When I look at my life the way it is now, I thank God for using GiveDirectly to bring a permanent change in my life as I believe that my life will always continue changing to the better.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
The additional goal for my life that I didn't have before receiving the transfer is to buy a piece of land back at home. This is because bringing up children in a slum is very hard as most people in the area are of unruly character. I would not wish to see my children growing up and adopting the characters which will lead them to destruction. Buying a piece of land is the best option which will enable me to raise my children in an area which is sparsely populated and the environment is conducive due to less pollution. My wife and children will always remain back at home while I come to town to look for money to meet their needs.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my most recent transfer to boost my business by buying more items to sell. I started my business of selling both second-hand and new clothes and shoes after receiving my first transfers and it was not yet stable. Adding more stock into my business will attract more customers since they will be knowing that by visiting my shop, they will have a variety of items to select on. It had always been my dream to start a business and after giving it a try using my first transfers, I knew that it was worth investing in it as the returns are promising. This business has enabled me to meet my needs and pay my bills on time unlike before.

Do you have any new goals that you didn't have before receiving the transfer?
I will work very hard to ensure my business does not fall and I marry since I will have a source of income to help sustain and meet my family needs because I have a stable source of income.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I have wanted to start a business in my life so that I can be dpendent and have a stable source of income. I have tried borrowing loans and I have never managed but when GD came, I was able to get cash and start shoe business which I know will help me develop and bring up a responsible and happy family.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my transfer on starting shoe business to help meet my financial needs and the rest of the money I used to buy clothes, bedding and to rent business.
Describe the moment when you started receiving transfers. How did you feel?
I felt very good because I have never received such kind of money of my life and I was going to fulfill my dream of starting business.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
I choose business because it is a profitable venture that can sustain my living. I would also like to polish my skills in mechanics so I can use is to generate income for myself too. Finally I will save what remains for future use or any emergency that might come up.
Describe your biggest worry.
My top concern is failing to meet my daily needs because of the desperate state that it puts someone into. It puts someone into a state of helplessness and misery. My other concern is crime and violence as in most cases, it can lead to harm of one's body or even death at times. Being an informal settlement area, crime and violence is rampant in this area. I also worry about a lack of shelter or a place to stay as being homeless is risky and distressing.
What are your greatest ambitions?
My ambition is to own a large clothes boutique that will stock both male, female and children wear; as well as shoes. I have always admired to buy and re-sell clothes, as I had mentioned earlier I will use part of my transfers to buy and re-sell 'mtumba' bales.
Describe your usual day. How do you spend your time?
I usually spend my day collecting garbage in my neighborhood in mashimoni. I do this with my group members for some income as an initiative we started together. We collect garbage for 3 days in a week. On the days that am not collecting garbage, I always engage in some construction work for pay. When am not working, I enjoy spending time with my friends and watching movies.
