How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have always in a two-roomed house because I did not have the resources to build a bigger one. I used to pray that some day I would get enough money to put up a house of my liking. I did not know the help would have come from GD. At first, I thought it was just an empty promise until I received my first transfer, I was very happy and went straight to our nearby hardware where I bought building materials such as iron sheets, timber and nails. I have used the materials to put up a three-bedroomed house. I feel so proud because of the house I built with gD transfers.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GD did well is bringing help to the less fortunate through cash. It was the best way to ensure everyone finds relief in whatever they were going through. I do appreciate this move. On the other hand, I feel the money should not have been sent in lumpsum. I would have preferred the money being sent on a monthly basis. It would have been so much helpful to the villagers.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent my second transfer on buying three cows which I used to pay dowry for my wife. We got married four years ago and I have not been able to raise money to pay dowery. The savings that I had, I used on medication and other family emergencies like school fees. The respect between me and my parents-in-law was starting to fall apart. I had to find a way to salvage the relationship. This is why I chose to buy cows to finally pay dowry for my wife. The rest of the transfer I used to pay college fees wife for my wife. She began her college education and we have been paying her arrears bit by bit and at this time, she was not going to sit for her end year examinations with clearing the balance. I had begun losing hope in making it in time before the end of year examination. When I received my transfer, I was very hopeful once again and felt so much joy because my major problems had been solved by the transfers.
