In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I commend Give Directly for visiting our village and assisting in the reduction of poverty. The transfers continue to dispel hunger in our families by aiding us in acquiring food. Personally, the transfers are critical in securing new furniture for me. I do not see any defects in Give Directly's work.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I got weary of digging tree stumps and making charcoal for a living as I got older. My son took on the responsibility of providing for the family, and he continues to do so by raising funds for food and supporting his children's education through the charcoal business.  His income is insufficient to meet any needs other than the most basic. That is why it was difficult to request a new bed after my old one broke and forced me to sleep on the mud floor. I have had a difficult time waking up every day feeling exhausted. This is why I decided to combine the first transfer with the most recent one to hire a carpenter to build me a new bed. However, there is still a KES 500 deficit that I intend to clear with the next transfer.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was out in the field preparing my farm for the upcoming rains after experiencing light rains for a few days. While busy working, my phone rang out loudly, attracting my attention. My daughter-in-law checked the contents of the message and informed me I had received my first transfer. As first as lightning, I dropped the jembe and hurriedly went back home, where I shared the good news with relatives. We broke into a dance as we sang praise songs, celebrating the moment.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
It is going to be a new journey and a fresh experience for me when I finally get to sleep comfortably in the new bed. I have persevered a lot of sufferings sleeping on the sisal mat among them being body pains which have affected my health. Purchasing the new bed is going to make a big difference in my life since receiving the transfers.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
For over twenty years, I have slept on sisal twined mat on the bare floor of my house. As a result, I developed serious health issues such as chest pains and severe back and body pains. I often visit the hospital to seek medical attention for my health issues. Due to my old age, I no longer work and fully depend on my son who works in town as a casual laborer, building houses for people. The lack of money prevented me from buying a good bed where I would sleep comfortably. Therefore, when I received my transfer, I spent KES 650 to pay as a deposit so that I can acquire a wooden bed. Besides buying the bed, I spent the remaining amount to buy food. I have faced serious challenges in affording a meal every day. Sometimes when I have no money, I am forced to sleep hungry. Buying the food in large quantities will ensure I have plenty to eat.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
The only store of wealth for me is venturing into livestock keeping because once a need arises, I can comfortably sort it out. This has been my greatest desire but due to lack of money, it has never come to reality. Since GiveDirectly has reached my household, I am very optimistic about realizing this dream and to start with, I only need 5 goats which will cost me 15000 KES. This means I will spend my first 5 months' transfers to make this possible. The remaining transfers will cater to other basic needs like food and clothes since I do not have anyone to depend on.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Despite the many challenges that I have gone through in life, one thing that I am grateful for is the good health that I have enjoyed over the last 6 months. This is something that I do not take for granted because it has given me a hopeful life and hence, I consider this as what has brought joy to my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Food insecurity is the greatest struggle that I am currently facing. We have experienced long droughts in our area that have hindered us from working on our farms and this means depending on relief food which is also not reliable in most cases. Forfeiting some meals has been the norm in my house and I mostly survive with one meal a day. Hence, this becomes the main challenge.
