How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have bought a cow that will soon provide me with milk and ghee. This will improve on my food security and nutrition. It will also save me from the budget of buying milk and instead channel use the money to paying school fees for my children. I used some part to buy iron sheets in preparation of building a modern, spacious house that can accommodate my family comfortably. I used some part to pay fees for my children as education is the best inheritance a parent can give to the children. I spent the remaining part to buy food since we never had a good harvest in the previous season.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Givedirectly has given people the freedom of choice and decision making on the best preferred destinies. The method of sending transfers was also secure and efficient. I have all the reasons to appreciate the organization, however, more transfers could be made available for the elderly who cannot fend for themselves.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent the transfer on buying iron sheets in readiness to building a better house. I am currently living in an old house that is small in size which cannot accommodate us comfortably.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that nowadays I am hopeful in life. With the revival of the sugarcane farm, I feel like I have a long term investment. I have something I can hold on to. At least I will not have to be employed in order to sustain my family
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was very happy when I got the message from from Mpesa. I have never received such an amount of money before. I felt relieved because I knew my life will change
What did you spend your first transfer on?
Upon receiving my transfer, I bought household furniture. I decided to buy Sofa sets because I did not have seats. I used to feel embarrassed whenever I had visitors. I would at times borrow seats from my neighbors. I also bought a cupboard, I can now keep my utensils and my other important documents safely. The remaining amount was spent on paying laborers that I had employed to plow my sugarcane farm. I thank Give Directly for helping me because I must admit my life has improved.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My ambition has been to ensure that my children obtain high quality education which will enable them to get good job and be independent in life. I shall therefore spend this money to educate them since I always look to them with sigh of hope. They have the potential to do well in their academics.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the afternoon when I am back home from weeding my sugarcane plantation. That is the time I always have an adequate rest together with the rest of my family. I feel happy whenever we relax and reflect on what we plan to do with the income that will be realized from our sugarcane harvest.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I face in my life is the inability to provide meals for my family members. My husband and I depend on unreliable casual labour which are poorly paid. In addition, we never had adequate harvest in the previous season since our crops were destroyed by flood leaving us in a state of desperation.
